Despite already making production cuts for May, Toyota is now having to re-adjust those plans in light not just of the semi-conductor shortage, but because of the COVID-19 outbreak in China.
Leading to the lack of parts, Toyota is adding production suspensions to 14 of lines at eight plants from Monday, May 16 to Saturday, May 21. Plants that will be shutdown include those responsible for assembling the RAV4, Land Cruiser 300 and Prado, Alphard, Hiace, and sadly, most Lexus models (LS, IS, RC, NX, CT, UX, LM).
The lockdown in China will also drop the Japanese automaker’s global production footprint from 750,000 units to 700,000 units this month. Moreover, it is making it difficult to look at production schedules several months ahead, according to the automaker.
Toyota says it will continue to make maximum effort to deliver as many vehicles as possible to their customers at the earliest possible date.
Shanghai is in its sixth week of an intensifying lockdown that has tested the manufacturers’ ability to operate amid hard restrictions on the movement of people and materials.
