Volkswagen Resurrects Scout Brand For New Line Of Rugged SUVs, Pickup Trucks

Volkswagen is resurrecting the Scout brand for a new line of all-electric vehicles that include an electric pickup truck and SUV. The move, which is aimed primarily for the U.S.-market, will have Volkswagen spin off Scout as a separate, independent company focused on “rugged” products.

The Scout name became part of the Volkswagen Group after the automaker’s Traton heavy-truck subsidiary purchased Navistar in 2020. Navistar was created in 1985 when International Harvester, which owned the Scout brand, folded.

International Harvester, known for tractors and heavy-duty trucks, began building the Scout in 1960, some five years before the Ford Bronco. One of the industry’s first SUVs, along with the Jeep CJ, the Scout became one of International Harvester’s most popular consumer vehicles of all time.

Volkswagen’s move to bring back the Scout nameplate echoes Ford’s. Resurrecting revered nameplates is good business for Ford—they’ve attracted 70 percent of new customers to the brand using its familiar names such as the Maverick, Bronco, and Mustang Mach-E.

The first prototypes of the all-electric Scout models will be presented by next year with plans to enter production by 2026.
