AAP President Elected To FIA Senate

Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) President Augustus “Joe” V. Ferreria, was elected to the FIA Senate during the meeting of the World Council for Automobile Mobility and Tourism held last June 21 at the FIA headquarters in Paris, France.

FIA Senate President Carmelo Sanz de Barros sent a congratulatory email to Ferreria welcoming him to the Senate. Before the meeting, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem phoned Ferreria that he was nominating him for election to the international committee.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) is the governing body that oversees four-wheel motorsport competitions worldwide, including Formula One, the World Rally Championship, Formula E, and various other forms of car racing. It has 244 motoring and motor sport club members in 146 countries. Focusing on three interlinked areas namely sport, campaigns and mobility, the FIA promotes safe, sustainable and accessible mobility for all road users across the world.

Ferreria is now a member of the 16-member FIA Senate which is headed by the FIA President, the Senate President, and the Deputy Presidents. He will be serving for a term of four years, until December 2026. According to the FIA website, the Senate’s main responsibilities are financial, handling issues relating to management and general policy that are not covered by any of the FIA World Councils.

Joe Ferreria, as he is known to many, served as AAP’s treasurer when he joined AAP’s board in 2009. During the AAP General Membership Meeting held online on July 29, 2021, Ferreria was elected AAP President.

Ferreria’s career spans 40 years of work as a professional of the financial services industry in various home office and entrepreneurial capacities. As a subject market expert on personal finance, he appeared on local television shows and contributed articles to national publications.

“I am honored and humbled at the same time to be conferred such a position,” Ferreria said. “It puts the Philippines in the map of international motor sport and mobility.”

This is not the first time that the AAP has been a member of an important and central committee in the FIA. Back in 2009, then AAP President Gus Lagman was the first Filipino to be elected to the FIA World Council for Automobile, Mobility and Tourism as the Region II (Asia and Pacific) Vice President. In June 2018, AAP hosted the 6 FIA World Sport Conference in Metro Manila, marking the first time that the conference was held in Asia.
