Lexus Drops V6, Adds 357-Horsepower F Sport Variant For 2023 RX SUV

Toyota’s premium brand, Lexus, has introduced the all-new fifth-generation RX mid-sized SUV. The Lexus RX features a refreshed look, new powertrains, and a platform endowed with the “Lexus Driving Signature.”

Now riding on the TNGA GA-K platform, the 2023 Lexus RX now comes with a new multi-link rear suspension tuned for a high level of dynamic performance. This is on top of a refined ride and high level of quietness—characteristics associated with the Lexus brand.

Up to 90 kilograms lighter than the outgoing model, the all-new Lexus RX offers a low center of gravity and optimized weight distribution. It has a longer wheelbase (up 60 mm), while overhangs have been shortened keeping the overall length (4,890 mm) the same as the previous RX.

The big news for the Lexus RX is the dropping of its familiar 3.5-liter V6. Instead, it comes with a family of 4-cylinder engines either turbocharged and/or electrified. The line-up starts with the RX 350 with its turbocharged 2.4-liter (275 horsepower, 427 Nm), followed by the RX 350h with its electrified 2.5-liter 4-cylinder (246 horsepower, 316 Nm). The range is topped by the RX 500h F Sport Performance (367 horsepower, 550 Nm) which pairs the aforementioned turbocharged engine with an electric motor. A plug-in hybrid, the RX 450h+ will join the line-up at a later time.

The RX 500h F Sport debuts a new system which Lexus calls Direct4. This precise all-wheel drive system uses the electric motors in order to distribute torque optimally. Moreover, it provides better posture control giving drivers a more direct driving experience without sacrificing fuel economy.

The 2023 RX doesn’t really re-write the Lexus design book, but builds on a more cohesive design framed by the spindle body design. The front features a “seamless” grille, while the sides feature alloy wheels in either 19- or 21 inches in diameter.

Inside, the all-new Lexus RX follows the same design philosophy introduced by the Lexus NX down to the e-Latch system. A 14-inch infotainment display is available as well as a panoramic sunroof come as the available features. As for safety, it comes with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 which adds a driver monitoring system on top of the Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection, Intersection Support and a new feature of Motorcycle Detection; All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with new Curve Speed Management (DRCC); Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA); and Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS). Advanced Park allows not just for automated parallel parking, but also conventional back-up and forward-facing parking.

The 2023 Lexus RX will go on sale at the end of 2022 in selected markets such as Japan and North America. For the Philippine market, it’s expected to arrive in the first part of 2023.
