Electronics giant Sony and Japanese carmaker Honda have announced the formation of a new company that will engage in the mobility business. The new company, Sony Honda Mobility, Inc., will sell “high-end value-added electric vehicles” and provide services for mobility.
The company, with a capital of 10 billion yen, will be owned equally by Sony Group Corporation and Honda Motor Company. It will be headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.
This announcement is the result of a strategic alliance discussion done last March.
According to a statement, the new company will aim to bring together Honda’s cutting-edge environmental and safety technologies, mobility development capabilities, vehicle body manufacturing technology, and after-sales service management experience, with Sony’s expertise in the development and application of imaging, sensing, telecommunication, network, and entertainment technologies. Together they will realize a new generation of mobility and services for mobility that are closely aligned with users and the environment, and continue to evolve going forward.
Sony and Honda plans to begin the sale of EVs and provision of services for mobility by 2025.
