The 2023 Torres Brings SsangYong Back To Its Rugged SUV Looks

Just a month after Korean automaker Ssangyong teased it, they’ve officially unveiled their all-new 5-seater mid-sized SUV: the 2023 Torres. Now with a potential savior in the form of the KG Group—a chemical and steel conglomerate (the deal with Edison Motors didn’t push through), it’s full steam ahead for the SUV specialist.

Pivotal in their turnaround plan, the Torres goes back to Ssangyong’s roots with its decidedly more off-road vibe. Upfront, it’s got a Jeep-style grille but with six vertical slats. It also features slim LED headlights, hard creases on the hood, and a stylized skid plate. Over to the side, the pronounced fenders contain large alloy wheels—up 20’s as an option, while a side storage box give it strong Land Rover Defender vibes. At the back, the tailgate mimics that of a rear-mounted spare (spoiler alert: it doesn’t) along with LED taillights and yet another skid plate.

Inside, the 2023 Torres contains three large screens. One serves as the driver’s instrumentation, another for the climate control system. For infotainment duties, there’s a free-standing 12.3-inch system. Other interesting touches include a flat-bottomed four-spoke steering wheel and the copious number of metallic accents. Features include ventilated front seats, ambient interior lighting with 32 colors, multiple USB ports, and even an advanced driver assist (ADAS) system with AEB and lane keep assist as standard.

In terms of luggage capacity, the Torres’ trunk space is huge—708 liters. It expands even more with the rear seats folded—1,662 liters.

As for powertrain, Ssangyong hasn’t revealed much in terms of technical detail, but they did confirm that it’ll come with a turbocharged direct-injected gasoline engine. According to past leaks, that would be the 1.5-liter 4-cylinder making about 170 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque. This is then mated to an Aisin-sourced 6-speed automatic driving all four wheels.

The 2023 Torres goes on pre-selling in South Korea where it’ll carry a price tag of 26.9 million won (P 1.112 million) to 30.4 million won (P 1.257 million). A pure electric model will also be coming, and that version’s destined for Europe come next year.
