Toyota, Suzuki To Collaborate On New Compact SUV To Replace Vitara?

The discontinuation of the Suzuki Vitara may come as a shock to fans of the compact crossover, but don’t worry, it seems a replacement is on the way and in a plot twist, it may not even be the Brezza.

Just announced, Toyota and Suzuki will be jointly collaborating on a new C-segment SUV meant for India first, but with export markets in mind. Suzuki will take the lead in the development, but it will be produced at the Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. (TKM) in Karnataka, India.

According to reports, the Vitara-sized crossover will supposedly ride on Toyota’s TNGA platform. Some have even suggested that it will utilize a modified version of the DNGA platform used by Daihatsu.

While details about the platform remain unclear, what has been confirmed is that the new SUV will be available in either mild- or full-hybrid flavors.

The Suzuki version, codenamed “YFG” will use a mild-hybrid setup which could mean it’ll use the electrified version of the K15C gasoline engine. On the other hand, the Toyota version, codenamed “D22” will feature Toyota’s full hybrid system. This version could use an electrified version of the 1.5-liter 3-cylinder in the Yaris.

Currently, TKM assembles two re-badged Suzuki cars—the Baleno which is the Toyota Glanza/Starlet and the Suzuki Brezza which is the Toyota Urban Cruiser.

More details on the new Suzuki/Toyota crossover will be released before its global unveil in August.
