The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder features an upright stance that makes it visually larger than its 4,365 mm frame suggests (wheelbase is at 2,600 mm). It gets a unique crystal acrylic grille with a chrome garnish and split-tyle LED headlights at the front; 17-inch alloy wheels and dual-tone body color at the side; and C-shaped LED taillights and an aggressive skid plate at the back.

Inside, it sports a two-tone black and brown interior with soft-touch padding on the dashboard. Upfront, the seats have a ventilation function, while the rear seats have an adjustable recline. Upping the luxury feel, it gets an automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, and a 9-inch free-standing infotainment system with wireless device charging.

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder also has over 55 connected features which uses an owner’s mobile phone or smart watch to communicate with the vehicle. Functionalities include remote vehicle start/stop, remote AC control, vehicle health monitor, and even stolen vehicle tracking.

Making the Urban Cruiser Hyryder unique is that it’ll be offered with standard hybrid power. The mild-hybrid system—dubbed NeoDrive by Toyota is developed by Suzuki. This pairs a 1.5-liter K15C with a 12-volt 6-Ah lithium-ion battery giving it a total of 102 horsepower and 135 Nm of torque. Transmission options for this guise are either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. If this is familiar, it is the same engine used in the Ertiga Hybrid and all-new Brezza.

Meanwhile, the Hybrid variants benefit from Toyota’s full-hybrid system (they actually call it a TNGA engine) which pairs a 92 horsepower 1.5-liter engine with an 80-horsepower AC Synchronous Motor. Total output is rated at 116 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque, while energy is stored in a 177.6-volt lithium-ion battery. This engine is available solely with Toyota’s e-Drive CVT.

Front-wheel drive is standard, but get this, the NeoDrive system can be equipped with all-wheel drive (manual only).

In terms of safety, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder comes with 6 SRS aibags, ABS with EBD, stability control, tire pressure monitors, and a 360-degree camera.

With the Corolla Cross Hybrid already serving as Toyota’s compact crossover offering here in ASEAN, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the Urban Cruiser Hyryder in our part of the world. It is destined for sale primarily in India and Africa. It is likely though that we’ll get to see in another form: its Suzuki twin which is rumored to be the all-new Vitara, or at least a version developed for developing markets.
