As the GAC Group celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, they’ve come up with the Space, a new concept car that not only realizes their past efforts, but also symbolizes the future and promise of GAC Motor moving forward.
“As designers, we have been thinking about how to combine these high-tech achievements with innovative designs in the exploration of future mobility.” said Fan Zhang, vice president of GAC R&D and head of design. “We believe the interior space and luxury experience are getting increasingly important as our customers pursue a better life. The balance of practicality and emotionality becomes a crucial consideration for future design. For this reason, we launched the the GAC Space Concept Car.”
The GAC Space features clean body surfacing sculpted using the interplay between light and shadow. The front end features sequential headlights and vertical illuminated grille bars which GAC calls, “Illuminated Waterfall.” Meanwhile, the rear portion, particularly the upturned eaves, is inspired by traditional Chinese roof architecture.
As you approach the Space, the door will open automatically revealing a landscape of GAC Motor’s home province: Guangzhou. The Baiyun Mountain and Pearl River motif is painted in green because of its strong oriental atmosphere.
The interior continues with a Chinese-centric theme. It’s inspired by the “winding stream party.” It’s a popular activity among ancient Chinese intellectuals wherein they sit by a winding stream and compose poems.
The L-shaped sofa in the second-row feature rows of stripes that grow and extend to the roof where the dome lights are made to look like clouds. Meanwhile, at the front, a three-tier display system includes a fabric touch display.
The GAC Space also has changeable seating configurations.
The first is the Bonfire Circle mode where the pedals drop down and the front seats rotate and slide rearward, facing the center table. Floor lights starts to glow like winding streams, and the center table gently turns as it rises. This enables all guests gathering naturally around the table and conversing freely.
There’s also the Team Time Lounge mode. With a touch of button, the upper part of tailgate slowly rises like the eaves of a teahouse as the lower part of tailgate extends forward, becoming a comfortable seating area. Users can then lounge and relax with a cup of tea while taking in the beautiful scenery.
The hydrogen-powered GAC Space is envisioned to have Level 4 autonomous driving technology. When activated, the steering wheel and the facial recognition display fold up and retract. Then the driver can sit back and relax through the journey without any intervention.
For now, the GAC Space remains purely a design concept or the Chinese brand. However, they’ve indicated that its design, particularly its nods to China’s rich cultural heritage will influence its upcoming production models.
Looks luxurious enough.
