Although final pricing has yet to be finalized, the 2023 Toyota GR86 is looking to undercut its Subaru twin and thus comes in a more “basic” trim.

Outside, this is immediately recognizable by the GR86’s smaller 17-inch machined/black 10-spoke alloy wheels shod with Michelin Primacy HP tires. Meanwhile, inside, it has fabric seats with a “G” motif.

Engine-wise, the GR86 is the same as the Subaru BRZ. For that, it uses the FA24 horizontally-opposed engine making 237 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 3,700 rpm. 

Confirmed is the availability of a 6-speed manual (TL70), but it’s very likely that it’ll be joined by an automatic variant (TX6A).

The GR86 also has a unique suspension tuning setting it apart from the Subaru BRZ. It is designed to be more drift-oriented as opposed to the grip-oriented tuning of its sportscar twin.

Detailed in a marketing product presentation, here are the key chassis differences found between the GR86 and the Subaru BRZ:

Unlike Subaru which went for one single spec for the BRZ, it’s very likely that Toyota Motor Philippines will introduce a higher trim for the automatic. If that’s the case, expect it to gain larger wheels and tires (215/40R18) as well as leather/Ultrasuede seats. It should also benefit from a driver assist technology derived from Subaru’s EyeSight system which Toyota calls “Toyota Star Safety System.”

The all-new Toyota GR86 will be officially launched in August. Pricing and final specifications will be announced closer to its market availability.
