Hyundai To Discontinue Accent By 2023

While the fate of the Reina is clear (it’ll be discontinued) under Hyundai’s new Philippine distributor, Hyundai Motor Philippines (HMPH), there’s still some uncertainty looming over its sub-compact sedan, the Accent. It seems they’ve opted to be mum about it and left its fate to Hyundai Motor Korea which has decided to axe the nameplate altogether.

Citing a market shift towards SUVs and electrified offerings, the Accent will be culled after 2023, joining the Sonata, Veloster, and Ioniq to a growing list of retired nameplates. The Accent has already been discontinued in Hyundai’s home market of South Korea, Australia, and Canada among others.

In India, where it’s known as the Verna, it has undergone an extensive refresh in 2020 (see above photos). Globally, the Accent will likely get another refresh due this year before biting the dust.

The Philippines, which relies on the Indian market for its CKD kits since 2021, hasn’t benefitted from the refreshed Accent/Verna as local assembly has stopped when the distributorship of Hyundai passenger cars changed hands.

Hyundai will now rely on the Venue to fill the outgoing Accent’s entry-level role. The Venue mixes fuel efficiency and modern styling closely related to Hyundai's flagship three-row Palisade.

  1. Hyundai is becoming like those Western brands that are quick to orphan models of their line up. Very bad for Hyundai owners.

    1. It's not their fault. It seems it's a global move to discontinue the Accent.

  4. But the Accent may be retained in China, India and Russia since those markets are the biggest for the Hyundai Accent.

    1. It's already been said that HMPH will not be getting units outside of Korea and Indonesia...that effectively means the Accent is dead in the Philippines.

As for Russia, with the current war with Ukraine that could mean a freeze in development. It will likely continue as some sort of "zombie" car in both India and China until Hyundai discontinues it. It will receive one last refresh before being discontinued altogether.
