Everything You Need To Know About The 2023 Nissan Livina

Nissan Philippines is introducing the 2023 Livina—its first small MPV in more than 15 years. Even more interesting is that it’s the ultimate flex of the benefits of the Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance in that it’s based off the Xpander which is the country’s current best-selling MPV.

Suffice to say, Nissan’s not taking this one sitting down. It’s going into the segment big time, and the current players, including its corporate sibling should take notice.

What’s standard across the 2023 Livina?

Across all four grades of the Livina (Livina 1.5 VL photos are used in this article) are design cues such as the V-motion grille, compound headlight design with halogen main beams and LED park lights. It also gets LED taillights with the signature Nissan pattern.

All models share the same powertrain too—a 1.5-liter DOHC 4-cylinder making 105 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque as well as basic dimensions: 4,510 mm in height, 1,750 mm in width, and a wheelbase of 2,775 mm.

Also standard across the Livina family are seven seats, a maximum gross vehicle weight of 1,790 kilograms (which means a payload of 540 to 565 kilograms), and a 5-year / 150,000-kilometer warranty. The PMS is also capped off a twice-a-year intervals, half that of Mitsubishi.

What on the 1.5 E grade?

The Livina line-up starts with the 1.5 E. It’s the fleet-oriented spec in that it’s the only one that comes with a 5-speed manual.

Exterior-wise, it’s got body-colored bumpers with black accents, body-colored side mirror-mounted turn signal indicators, and body-colored door handles. It’s also the only one to ride on 15-inch steelies with 185/65 R 15 tires. For that, it sits at 1,695 mm in height or 5 mm lower than the VE and VL.

Inside, it’s got a 4-way manually-adjustable driver’s seat, beige fabric seats, and a urethane steering wheel (no steering wheel buttons) with tilt/telescopic adjustment. Despite being relatively bare, it does have a 7-inch touchscreen display audio system with Bluetooth and Phonelink (no Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto) and 2 speakers.

As for safety, it comes with dual SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, and that’s about it.

If I move up to the 1.5 EL, what do I get?

In terms of exterior, the 1.5 EL upward gets daytime running lights and front fog lights. It also swaps the steel wheels for 15-inch alloy wheels.

Moving to the interior, it gets brown fabric seats, steering wheel controls, and seatback pockets on both the driver and front passenger side. It also swaps the 7-inch touchscreen display audio for a 2-DIN setup with USB, Aux, and a CD drive as well as 4 speakers.

How about the 1.5 VE?

Without a doubt, Nissan’s looking at the 1.5 VE to be their volume driver, and its specs is reflective of that.

Exterior-wise, it now gets you power folding side mirrors (still body-colored) and machine-finished 16-inch alloy wheels with 205/55R16 tires. This also happens to bump up the overall height to 1,700 mm. Ground clearance is pegged at 205 mm.

There are far more creature comfort and safety features too such as a height adjustable driver’s seat, chrome inner door handles, and standardization of rear parking sensors and vehicle stability control with hill start assist. Oh, and given it’s got a standard rear parking camera too, the infotainment system’s moved back to a 7-inch touchscreen display set-up with 4 speakers.

What’s in the top-of-the-line 1.5 VL?

The top-spec Livina 1.5 VL is immediately distinguishable thanks to its spattering of chrome. You can find the shiny bits on the door handles, side view mirrors, and window molding. It’s also the only variant to get silver accents to its bumpers.

Stepping inside, you get the added luxury of leather steering wheel and leather seats. It’s the only variant to get an Intelligent Key system with push button start/stop. In addition, it gets a colored LCD multi-information display, two more speakers (total of 6), one more 12-volt power outlet (total of 3), and one more USB port (total of 2—or weirdly enough, the same as the 1.5 E).

  1. Just like its Xpander twin, this is overpriced for a 1.5L MPV with drum rear brakes, an archaic 4 speed auto, and lack of safety for a family vehicle. We'll see how Honda and Hyundai will price and spec the BR-V and Stargazer next.

  2. Xpander entered the group, it's even better.

  3. Livina E mt vs. Xpander Glx mt. With a small price difference, you get a better deal with mitsubishi, from a better alloy wheels, reverse camera just to name a few. Not to mention the xpander is a refresh model with a bit higher ground clearance while the livina is based off the old xpander which means it has a potential to a fuel pump issues but i hope not of course!

  8. Very annoying offering from Nissan. This Livina is overpriced. Pricier than the previous Xpander. Overpriced like the Fortuner G and Hilux V.
