Hyundai IONIQ 5, Other EVs Lead 2022's List Of Best Engines

In a trend that started last year, the ten best engines in the world are electrified. Wards, an American-based organization that has covered the automotive industry for over 80 years, has released their annual list of the 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems. Seven are electrified including five battery electrics and a pair of hybrids.

This year, Wards Auto evaluated 29 vehicles—17 of them electrified. These included 11 BEVs, four plug-in hybrids, and two hybrids.

Of the 12 purely internal-combustion engines tested, there were seven 4-cylinder engines, two 6-cylinder engines, two V8s and one 3-cylinder engine. Continuing a trend Wards has seen for several years, only two ICEs were naturally aspirated, with turbochargers fitted to eight of the nominees and superchargers on the two V8s tested.

The Wards 10 Best list has recognized 28 years’ worth of engines, with scoring based on horsepower, torque, NVH management, observed efficiency, and new technology onboard. A price cap for nominees that had been in place since 1995 was removed in 2021.

While evaluating the vehicles, only powertrains that are all-new or significantly improved are eligible for testing. The 2021 class of Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems winners are eligible to return, but just one returning powertrain, the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 PHEV in the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, earned repeat honors.

According to Wards, the lack of returnees indicates the tremendous level of development of new propulsion systems. Not too many years ago, a strong powertrain might have retained its spot in the list, says the publication.

But with the pace of electrification and advances in internal combustion, it’s a rare propulsion system that can impress Wards judges for more than a year or two. Turnover in powertrains is at a peak moment, they said, exemplified not only by the rush of electric propulsion systems coming to market, but also in internal-combustion development.

The 2022 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems Winners, listed alphabetically:
  • Acura Integra A-Spec – 1.5L Turbocharged DOHC 4-Cyl.

  1. Upcoming 4 cars such as: Ioniq 6, Nexo, Santa Cruz, & Stargazer in the next PH?

    1. Stargazer is indeed next for HMPH before end of the year or early next year. So does Ioniq 6 if there's enough EV infra like more charging stations, but for 2024. Santa Cruz is not likely to land in APAC yet, unless Hyundai sees a potential for compact pick-up. Nexo is definitely not going here since we don't have infrastructure for hydrogen fuel, AFAIK.
