Despite increased competition from other carmakers, Mitsubishi Motors has announced that they have continued to corner the Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) market in their home market of Japan.
The newly launched Outlander PHEV (lead photo) sold a total of 10,749 units in the first half of fiscal year 2022, enough for a number one ranking, while the Eclipse Cross PHEV ended up in second place with 2,430 units. The combined 13,179 units is enough for Mitsubishi to corner a 65 percent market share in the PHEV segment.
The Outlander PHEV is Mitsubishi Motors’ flagship SUV which brings all its electrification and all-wheel drive know-how. Launched in Japan in December 2021, it has been highly acclaimed for its bold exterior design, available 7-seater configuration, and of course, the performance of its twin-motor 4WD. The model will be launched in both Australia and New Zealand this year, in North America in 2022, and the rest of the world sometime in 2023.
Based on Mitsubishi’s internal records, the top-of-the-line 7-seater configuration commanded majority of Outlander PHEV sales, garnering 81 percent. White Diamond is the most popular color (43 percent) followed by the two-tone White Diamond/Black Mica (18 percent).
