Hyundai’s first-ever compact MPV, the Stargazer managed just a 4-star safety rating at the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program or ASEAN NCAP.
Tested using the ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 assessment protocol, the Stargazer managed an overall score of 66.48 out of 100.
During its crash test, the ASEAN NCAP noted that the Stargazer managed to have excellent performance in terms of Adult Occupancy Protection (AOP) in frontal-impact (13.79 out of 16) and side-impact (7.18 out of 8) protection.
However, because the variant tested was equipped with just two airbags, data showed a high possibility for the driver to sustain injuries to the chest and right leg in the event of a crash. The same can be said about the driver’s mere marginal protection during a side-impact collision. These results dragged down the Stargazer’s overall score despite an overall rating of 31.21 out of 40.
When it comes to Child Occupant Protection, the Stargazer scored 14.48 out of 20.
When it comes to Safety Test Assist Technology, the Stargazer does come with a bevy of advanced driver assist technologies. The model tested comes not just with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard, but also Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) City, AEB Inter-Urban, AEB Pedestrian, Blind Spot Detection (BSD), and Auto High Beam (AHB). This allows the Stargazer to reach 12.04 out of 20 in this category (it did not achieve a higher score because ESC is not standard across the line). The same goes for Motorcyclist Safety where it scored 8.75 out of 20, missing out on a higher score due to the lack of Advanced Rear Visualization.
2023 Hyundai Stargazer ASEAN NCAP Score
- Overall: 66.48 out of 100
- Adult Occupancy Protection: 31.21
- Child Occupancy Protection: 14.48
- Safety Assist Technology: 12.04
- Motorcyclist Safety: 8.75
I don't know how NCAP is determining how many airbags should be used (BRV had all airbags deployed) and why but the 2022 Veloz test also just used 2 airbags and got 5 star rating.
