With the discontinuation of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution in 2016 and the planned phase out of the Subaru WRX STI after this generation, it has had a positive effect when it comes to collectability.
According to Classic Car Auctions (CCA), they’ve seen an uptick in auction values for both these all-wheel drive, turbocharged sedans.
CCA says that to the generation who grew up watching Fast and Furious or played Gran Turismo or Need for Speed, the Lancer Evolution and the WRX STI represents some of the most recognizable Japanese Domestic Market or JDM halo cars. This has made them increasingly desirable. Couple that with the fact that both carmakers have discontinued the line and poor examples have been weeded out (or crashed), good surviving and/or restored examples are starting to command a premium.
Based on auction sales data (see above), the popularity and desirability of both the WRX STI and Lancer Evolution haven’t even plateaued yet. On the average, the WRX STI is now starting to command a price tag of around £ 35,000 (P 2.388 million). Meanwhile, the Lancer Evolution is worth even more with an average price of £ 60,000 (P 4.09 million).
As they become rarer, CCA says both the Lancer Evolution and WRX STI are expected to become even more desirable. This has led CCA to advice would-be owners to buy one before prices peak.
