Unveiled to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Toyota Thailand, the home of the IMV or International Multi-Purpose Vehicle platform since 2002, it was unveiled by no less than Akio Toyoda himself.

Though the Hilux and its other IMV derivatives, the Innova and Fortuner, continue to sell well, some doubts have been cast given the shift of the Innova to a front-wheel drive unibody architecture. It seems that impending death is premature since the IMV will continue on with the first model riding on the platform expected to arrive in 2023.

Designed to support economic growth and entry-level mobility, the IMV 0 continues the legacy of the original IMV in that it will improve the quality of life for many people. Taking in the learnings from the original IMV, the IMV 0 Concept now features a level of modularity and customizability that’s best described as “Lego-like.” Modules specifically for overlanding and cargo hauling are some that Toyota showed for the concept.

More interesting is the “0” or “Zero” in the concept’s name. Although Toyota hasn’t revealed much mechanical detail during its presentation, it could represent a family of eco-friendly powertrains such as hybrid, BEV, fuel cell (FCEV), or even hydrogen-combustion.

On the other side of the spectrum, Toyota also showed off its first full-electric pickup truck: the Hilux Revo BEV Concept. Clearly based on the current Hilux with its combustion engine and gas tank swapped for an electric motor and battery, it could foreshadow Toyota’s move to electrify its commercial vehicle line. For the moment, Toyoda himself said its existence is to support the company’s move towards carbon neutrality and a better environment for all.

The Hilux Revo BEV Concept shows that Toyota is ready with the Thailand government’s move to have 30 percent of all vehicles on their roads be EVs by 2030.
