Honda announced that it will compete in the top-tier Super GT GT500 class with the Civic Type R-GT.
A sneak peek of the racer, officially called the Civic Type R-GT Concept, based on the all-new FL5 Civic Type R, was shown at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon. Development at Honda Racing Co. (HRC) is currently on-going for participation at the 2024 Super GT Championship.
The Civic Type-R GT follows the footsteps of the NSX-GT which Honda has been using since 2014. Like other entrants in the GT500 class, they’re basically “silhouette” racing cars which may have some resemblance to road-going cars, but are actually purpose-built racecars.
It is the first GT500 racer based on a 4-door model, a provision which organizers of the Super GT first introduced in 2012.
By regulation, the GT500 class cars use a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine developing well over 550 horsepower and over 500 Nm of torque.
