Meet The Country's First Hybrid MPV: The 2023 Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid (w/ Specs)

Suzuki Auto Philippines launches the country’s first hybrid MPV in the form of the 2023 Ertiga Hybrid.

The best-selling 7-seater compact MPV receives the Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki or SHVS system. This pairs the Ertiga’s tried-and-tested K15B 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) to deliver improved fuel efficiency and driving performance. The system is ingenious in that it’s lightweight and ultra-compact. Moreover, it delivers the very same driving experience customers have loved, with just some minor changes.

The ISG replaces the conventional alternator in the SHVS. At take off or hard acceleration, it provides an electric assist to the engine improving its overall responsiveness. The ISG also captures energy during deceleration to charge the 12-volt lithium-ion battery located under the driver’s seat. This allows the Ertiga to shut its engine off during traffic stops, relying on the stored energy in the high-voltage battery. During restarts, the ISG quietly and smoothly restarts the engine.

For the Philippine market, the Ertiga Hybrid comes in both 5-speed manual (GA, GL), and 4-speed automatic (GL, GLX) flavors. Cruise control come standard on the GLX.

Per Suzuki’s estimates, the Ertiga Hybrid is capable of achieving class-leading fuel efficiency figures. Their internal tests have revealed figures of 12.54 km/L (verified by the Automobile Association of the Philippines), fully-loaded and in purely city driving. During our three-day test (full review out soon), we able to able to achieve 16.12 km/L—and that’s purely in city driving.

Its electrified powertrain aside, the Ertiga Hybrid improves on the elegant MPV’s design by gaining a new modern-looking grille, new tailgate garnish, and a new “Hybrid” rear emblem. The top-of-the-line GLX further adds power side view mirrors with turn signal indicators, 3D design LED taillights with vertical lightguides, and polished 15-inch alloy wheels with 185/65R15 tires.

Thanks to the SHVS’s clever packaging, there are no compromises to the Ertiga Hybrid’s interior and space. Not only does it retain its full-sized spare tire, but its two-tier rear luggage compartment offers 199 liters of cargo space with the third-row seats up. With the third- and second-row seats folded down, it creates a continuously flat hold. The seatbacks are also reclinable, and the second-row seats slide in a 60/40 split for comfort and flexibility.

The upscale dashboard features a D-shaped steering wheel with audio controls and a new instrument cluster. The GLX further adds a 4.2-inch colored multi-information display and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Convenience features found on the GLX include a keyless push start system, automatic climate control, and ventilated front cup holders.

With safety a priority among Filipino families, the Ertiga Hybrid not only sports dual SRS airbags and ABS with EBD, but it also gets Electronic Stability Program or ESP too. If wheel slip is detected, ESP automatically regulates engine output and selectively applies the brakes to help the driver regain control. The GL and GLX variants also get rear parking sensors, while the GLX goes a step further with a rear parking camera.

The Ertiga Hybrid comes in three variants; GA, GL, GLX. It comes in six colors, the availability of which depends on the variant:
  • Snow White Pearl: GA, GL, GLX
  • Silky Silver Metallic: GA, GL, GLX
  • Cool Black Pearl: GA
  • Metallic Magma Gray: GL, GLX
  • Burgundy Red Pearl: GL, GLX
  • Brave Khaki Pearl: GL, GLX
The Ertiga Hybrid is now available for retail sales at all authorized Suzuki dealerships nationwide at the following prices:
  • Ertiga Hybrid 1.5 GA MT – P 954,000
  • Ertiga Hybrid 1.5 GL MT – P 1,068,000
  • Ertiga Hybrid 1.5 GL AT – P 1,103,000
  • Ertiga Hybrid 1.5 GLX AT – P 1,153,000
Per Suzuki Philippines, the Ertiga Hybrid qualifies for benefits under the EVIDA. This means up to 15 percent lower registration costs, priority registration upon renewal, and exemption from the number coding scheme.

  1. Sir Uly, so the Ertiga Hybrid is now available in the country, does this means all variants of the Ertiga are now offered with SHS and this would also replaced the regular versions (non-SHS) of the Ertiga?

    1. That's correct. The SHVS will be standard. No more non-hybrid version of the Ertiga...until supplies last though.

  2. 1M for a Hybrid No Coding Car. Damn

  3. Just a mild hybrid system. This will be probably be only 10% more fuel efficient than regular engine and not worth the additional cost in batteries down the line

    1. That's better for current PH roads & power infrastructure. That small 12V Li-Ion battery is still way cheaper than the ones used on the Toyotas, Nissans & Chinese crap.

  4. I like that clean & pleasant instrument panel cluster dials & central MID, none of that calculator-like LCD resolution & fancy full LCD screen dial graphics that wash out in daylight or becomes too distracting at night. It's priced right as well considering the specs & features. Looking forward to the XL7 SUV variant of this model.

  5. Uly, since it has an engine start-stop feature, does it use a more expensive deep-cycle EFB or AGM battery or is it just a regular lead-acid battery?

  6. I compared this release model with the one they displayed at PIMS, aside from the sporty body kit & different wheel design which weren't expected to make it to the local version, the GLX also lost the leather seats, 2 more airbags like in the Indian version, power-folding side mirrors, powered rear hatch & 360-degree camera. But no complaints given the price, I think this would become the best-selling hybrid model in the country since this it is the lowest-priced & is more practical than the base model Kicks at 1.3M. The other hybrids are just too expensive and/or can't seat 7.

    1. The one shown at PIMS was the Ertiga Sport model. Won't be surprised if it'll be added to the line-up at a later time. We're lucky in the sense that the hybrid has become the standard engine...in Indonesia, for example, you can only get it on the top trims.

    2. I expected that given the price point they were targeting, so no complaints from me, just pointing out the possible feature additions they could do later on. Anyway, I'm more interested in the XL7 variant of this thing if it actually comes close to the 12-16 km/L fuel mileage in city driving that you wrote above rather than the "6-7 km/L, no different from the conventional variant" fuel mileage that the heavy-footed YT vloggers are saying.

  7. The tranny is a conventional AT, not a CVT?

  8. It's hilarious that the usual local YT brochureware reciters & marketing dept. PR talking points parrots only got "6-7 km/L" in city driving when they tested the Ertiga Hybrid. Lulz wtf. The overpriced Toyota hybrid owners and the 4-seater only Kicks owners with the 400K battery all piled on predictably, breathing a sigh of relief even though they can never recover the higher upfront & continuing maintenance costs with the fuel savings they get from their hybrids. Lulz.

    1. Fuel economy is dependent on driving conditions and route. It must be noted that the 6-7 km/L noted by another publication happened during Christmas rush hour traffic.

In Suzuki's own test, they managed around 12 km/L fully loaded with passengers and in the urban setting.

When we did our usual test route, we managed 16 km/L, but that's with a relative high average speed of 24 km/h (it included weekend traffic).

    2. The biggest selling point here (per Suzuki) is that it's compliant with the EVIDA rules which means no coding. Although I can imagine other carmakers clamoring for that particular provision of the law to change very, very soon.

    3. Even so, 6-7 km/L is still pretty bad considering this has an engine start-stop function and a measly 1.5L engine displacement, and there's probably just the driver & videographer inside the vehicle when they tested it out. That's like the consumption of a 2.4L gasoline engine crossover already. If 12-16 km/L is the best case scenario in urban use, I'd expect at least 9-10 km/L in a more realistic traffic scenario.

  9. So its main feature to save gas is the start/stop while in traffic or traffic light stops. Does it require that you put the shifter in "N" or Park when you stop? I can't imagine the engine going on start/stop mode while stuck in traffic w/ the shifter in "D". Or will it also restart while you're stopped & in "D"?

    1. The engine will shut off at stops even with the gearbox at D. It will re-engage the engine once you let go of the brake (automatic) or engage the clutch (manual).

  10. Sir i ask were lithium battery place
