Peugeot is heralding a new vision for future electric vehicles, and starting that era is the Inception Concept. It will inspire the French carmaker’s products from 2025 onwards, with the goal of bringing most of the innovations seen here to production.
In terms of design, the Inception Concept introduces a new, simpler, and more refined design language with an all-new light signature that still incorporates Peugeot’s distinctive claw design. Here though, it’s been made to merge with the grille that happens to house the sensors. The single piece structure is highlighted by the 3D Peugeot logo at the center.
At the sides, a “Tech Bar” runs horizontally through the door layer. This flush screen can emit different messages to the outside of the car when the driver and passengers approach it, including battery charge level. It also happens to house various sensors that help the Inception Concept to recognize the driver in order to setup various personalization settings while still keeping the bodywork completely smooth.
The bold design also incorporates a huge 7.25-square meter glass that creates a “capsule” for the passenger compartment that plunges to the driver and front passenger’s feet. A special glazing—derived from a process used for the visor of NASA astronauts—helps it retain exceptional thermal qualities.
Completing the unique design is an exclusive body color that changes its tinting according to the external environment. The paint itself is single-coated, meaning far less energy is consumed during its application.
Riding on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform, the Inception Concept has a low 1.34-meter overall height and a length of 5 meters. This “BEV by design” platform will help Peugeot re-shape the passenger compartment and it can seen in their Hypersquare control concept.
The centerpiece of the next-generation i-Cockpit design, the Hypersquare control concept is inspired by video games and for that, does away with the conventional steering wheel in favor of digital electric controls and steer-by-wire technology.
At the center is a tablet-style screen controlling everything from air conditioning to infotainment to even the driver assist systems. Pictograms are used for the different features and are displayed on the two side panels to facilitate access to the chosen control. The latter is located inside the circular recesses and can be accessed by moving the thumb only, without taking your hands off the steering control. And with Level 4 autonomous driving promised, Hypersquare retracts and a large panoramic screen slides out from the floor to offer a new passenger compartment experience.
Peugeot says the Hypersquare will enter production before the end of the decade.
The minimal cockpit also provides a completely open view of the road, while sustainable materials are used throughout its construction. For example, the seats are covered with velvet made from 100 percent recycled polyester, and this extends to the floor which features a 3D pattern to act as a floor mat.
Powering the Inception Concept is a 800-volt system whose 100-kWh battery enables it to travel up to 800 kilometers (497 miles) on a single charge. It also means being able to add approximately 30 kilometers of range in just one minute, or 150 kilometers in five. It can also be recharged wirelessly by induction.
With two compact electric motors, one at the front, the other at the rear, the Inception Concept is an all-wheel drive vehicle generating around 680 horsepower. Its 0 to 100 km/h time is pegged at under 3 seconds.
Peugeot is committed to electrifying its entire range. By this year, their entire line-up will be electrified, and in the next two years, five new 100 percent electric models will be launched. By 2030, all Peugeot models, at least in Europe, will be fully electric.
