2023 RAV4 Is Latest Toyota Model To Get The Gazoo Racing Treatment

The RAV4 is the latest model to get the Toyota Gazoo racing treatment after being announced last October. A theme that’s already been applied to other Toyota models such as the Hilux, Fortuner, and Corolla Cross, the RAV4 GR Sport receives unique styling and handling modifications for a sportier driving experience.

Like other Gazoo Racing models, the RAV4 GR Sport receives a grille with a G-mesh insert. The same pattern has been applied to the enlarged fog light bezels which now have boomerang-shaped frames. The lower bumper also gets a dark gray metallic finish as opposed to the silver colored one on other RAV4 models.

At the rear, a gloss black garnish now extends the width of the vehicle, between the glass and license plate. The G-mesh pattern appears again in the rear bumper, which also has air-bleeding openings to improve aerodynamic performance. Further emphasizing the RAV4’s purposeful look, the lower bumper has a dark gray metallic molding across its bottom edge.

New GR Sport 19-inch wheels, engineered for reduced weight and higher rigidity, and GR logo badging complete the exterior changes.

Inside, the RAV4 GR Sport gets a predominantly black color that now extends to the upholstery and even liner. The seats are upholstered in a combination of a grippy, body-holding suede-like materials for the shoulder, back rest and cushion sections and synthetic leather for the bolsters. Silver gray stitching adds a smart contrast on the seats, steering wheel, and shift lever. The front seat head rests are embossed with the GR logo in black-on-black.

Dark gray metallic trim details are also found on the steering wheel, air vent bezels, and center console frame around the shifter. The GR logo is also found on the steering wheel and carpet mats.

New to the RAV4 GR Sport is a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster with four themes. To the center, it’s fitted with a 10.5-inch infotainment touchscreen with a sharper resolution. The side buttons have been removed in favor of a new touchscreen-based icon-based menu. Apple CarPlay—wired and wireless is standard, while Android Auto remains a fully wired affair.

The hybrid electric RAV4 GR Sport continues with Toyota’s fourth generation full hybrid technology. Full system output is 222 horsepower, enabling a 0 to 100 km/h of just 8.1 seconds.

Though the powertrain hasn’t been changed, the suspension has been recalibrated for improved handling response. The front and rear coil springs have been stiffened to put the focus on agility and responsiveness. Changes to the spring coefficient are matched by appropriate adjustment of the shock absorbers’ damping force. The front spring rates are up to 30 N/mm from 28, while the rear spring rates are now at 46 N/mm from 40.

The RAV4 GR Sport comes standard with an intelligent electric all-wheel drive system (AWD-i). AWD-i efficiently generates drive torque using power from the vehicle’s hybrid system and an additional electric motor on the rear axle. This allows it to match or even surpass the typical torque delivered to the rear wheels compared to a mechanical setup. The front/rear drive torque split can vary from 100:0 to up to 20:80, according to the driving conditions. The ratio is automatically optimized to give improved handling, stability, and off-road performance.

All-wheel drive performance is further improved with AWD Integrated Management (AIM), a unique feature in the RAV4’s class. This automatically adjusts different vehicle systems – steering assist, brake and throttle control, shift pattern, and drive torque distribution – according to the drive mode selected, Normal, Eco or Sport. In Sport mode, AIM modifies the steering assist, throttle control shift schedule and drive torque distribution to gain better on-road performance.

Finally, for those who plan to go off-road, the RAV4 GR Sport is equipped with a Trail Mode thanks to an automatic limited-slip differential. This ensures the best possible grip and control on slippery surfaces. It can also provide valuable assistance when tackling challenging off-road conditions.

This counters the risk of the vehicle becoming stranded if a driven wheel loses contact with the ground on very uneven terrain. In this scenario, the driver can engage Trail Mode using a button on the center console, braking the free rotating wheel and directing drive torque to the grounded wheel. Throttle control and the transmission shift pattern are also adapted to help the driver keep the vehicle moving.

Should Toyota Motor Philippines consider bringing in the RAV4 Hybrid GR Sport?

  1. When will the Rav4 get a full model change? I hope a GR version is on the way.... not just cosmetic GR parts.
