After teasing the availability of a plug-in hybrid variant and the performance of its turbocharged inline-6, Mazda has finally pulled the wraps off its first-ever three-row SUV riding on the new Large Product platform: the first-ever 2024 Mazda CX-90.
Built on the new Large Product platform, the CX-90 features a front-engine, rear-wheel-bias longitudinal powertrain layout that elevates driving performance. Engineers focused on optimizing rigidity throughout the entire body while thanks to Kinematic Posture Control (KPC), which first debuted on the MX-5, this 7- or 8-seater SUV offers enhanced levels of grip, balance, and control.
The 2024 CX-90 engine range is capped off by the all-new e-Skyactiv-G 3.3-liter inline-6 engine. This has the highest horsepower and torque from a mass production gasoline engine developed by Mazda with 340 horsepower (345 PS) and 502 Nm of torque when using premium fuel. It’s also equipped with M-Hybrid Boost—a mild-hybrid system that allows an electric motor to power it directly at low speeds boosting fuel efficiency.
Joining the engine range is a re-tuned version of the 3-Skyactiv PHEV powertrain. Shared with the CX-60, it maxes out at 323 horsepower (327 PS) and 500 Nm of torque when using premium fuel. Thanks to a 17.8-kWh lithium-ion battery, it can run solely on electric power in a variety of driving scenarios. For non-American markets, it will be made available with a 3.3-liter turbo diesel also with mild hybrid technology. In this guise, it makes 254 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque.
All CX-90 powertrains are paired with an all-new 8-speed automatic. Without a torque converter, the multi-plate clutch-equipped system (but not a dual clutch) achieves smooth and direct acceleration while upping efficiency.
Like other current Mazda models, the CX-90’s design uses an interplay of light and shadow. Chrome garnishes on the lower bumpers emphasize its width, while available 21-inch diamond cut wheels with a black metallic finish complement its powerful presence. It’s showcased in Mazda’s latest Takuminuri color—Artisan Red and Rhodium White.
The cabin emphasizes expansiveness through the positioning of the vents and chrome trim. Inspired by Japanese aesthetics, it has a luxurious and comfortable feel across all three rows. From the front seats to the available captain's chairs, and into the third row, there are multiple materials, such as nappa leather, wood, and tone-on-tone fabrics that all come together harmoniously.
One example is the distinctive fabric on the dash connected using hanging stitches, which is specifically inspired by hand-bookbinding and an intricate Japanese weaving technique known as Kumihimo. This method deliberately uses negative space to create a unique design for CX-90 that echoes to its Japanese lineage.
Complementing the refined interior, the CX-90 includes many new, advanced technologies and amenities that elevate the driving experience, while also providing premium comfort and convenience for all occupants. This includes available third-row USB-C charging ports, air conditioning vents, and upgraded interior lighting, among many more features.
CX-90 also features larger displays, accompanied by physical buttons that complement the interior styling. New Mazda technologies, such as an available See-Through View monitor, are meant to assist in a variety of parking situations through the 12.3-inch center display.
As with all Mazda vehicles, the CX-90 seeks to maintain the same top safety recognition as Mazda's other products with many standard i-Activsense safety features, such as Smart Brake Support, Blind Spot Monitoring, Mazda Radar Cruise Control, and other new features that will help enhance the confident experience for all occupants.
The first-ever 2024 Mazda CX-90 will launch first in markets such as the United States by Spring (March to June) 2023. Other markets such as Australia, and probably the Philippines to follow soon thereafter. Pricing is expected to top out at USD 60,000 (P 3.3 million).
Front looks elegant and imposing, but that rear looks forced and a little out of proportion.
ReplyDeleteDesigned specifically for North American market therefore its only for North American market not in ASEAN countries
ReplyDeleteIt's confirmed already for at least North America and Australia--these are both LHD and RHD drive markets. For as long as production is Japan, there's a good chance that we'll get it here. After all, we got the CX-9 ahead of a lot of markets before.
DeleteWe shall see about that hahaha
DeleteExterior looks underwhelming considering how good the CX-30, CX-5, and CX-9 look despite having to conform with FWD proportions. The fake vent with "Inline 6" badging is also tacky. The new interior does look lovely though.
ReplyDeleteOkay, im gonna insta-trade in my CX-9 when this arrives in Philippine shores.
ReplyDeleteJust curious. As a cx9 owner, have you ever actually fully utilized your extra 2 seats during your entire ownership?

Delete@Anonymous Just about 10 times, i always buy a 7-seater just in case we need extra seats as my other family members are only on 5-seaters and owning a Van is out of the question. (we're quite a big family)
Delete@King Vanette There are discussions in our Club that if CX-90 isn't released here in the Philippines, well be getting the CX-80 which is smaller but also comes with an inline-6.
