2024 Subaru Crosstrek Drops Hybrid, Gains 182-Horsepower Engine For U.S. Market

Five months after its global debut in Japan, the all-new 2023 Subaru Crosstrek has been unveiled for the U.S. market. During its jump across the Pacific (and its shift from right- to left-hand drive), the compact crossover lost its hybrid engine. Instead, it comes with a choice between two traditional combustion engines.

Straight to the point, the U.S. market Crosstrek comes with either a 2.0-liter (FB20) or 2.5-liter (FB25) 4-cylinder engine. Both are arranged in the brand’s trademark horizontally-opposed layout with the former registering 152 horsepower and 196 Nm of torque and the latter putting out 182 horsepower and 241 Nm of torque. For 2024, Subaru has also dropped the manual (a move they’ve done with the Impreza) in favor of a purely CVT line-up driving all four wheels via the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. And no, a front-wheel drive version is not available. If you are keeping tabs on the latest Subaru models, these powertrain options are lifted straight from the 2024 Impreza.

Riding on an enhanced version of the Subaru Global Platform (10 percent higher torsional rigidity FTW), the all-new Crosstrek gets Active Torque Vectoring and the Subaru SI-Drive performance management system. Furthermore, it receives a version of the WRX’s dual-pinion electric power steering system.

The highest-trim Crosstrek Sport (see accompanying photos) adds a dual-function X-Mode with Hill Descent Control. This allows drivers to access Deep Snow/Mud mode apart from the usual Snow/Dirt mode found in other variants of the Crosstrek.

In addition, the Crosstrek Sport is distinguished by the yellow exterior accents on the front, sides, and rear panels. The striking palette is complemented with 18-inch alloy wheels in a dark gray finish and gloss black finish on the front grille, side mirrors and roof spoiler. Inside, the Crosstrek Sport features a stylish interior with seats wrapped in gray cloth with yellow accents. Yellow contrast stitching and simulated carbon fiber interior trim are found throughout the cabin. The odometer and tachometer on the combination meter are surrounded by yellow metallic finish trim rings.

Like its Japanese market counterpart, the all-new Crosstrek receives an 11.6-inch portrait-style touchscreen that’s equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto (with full screen display). Base models, on the other hand, splits the touchscreen into two 7-inch systems.

Other features include wireless device charging, dual-zone heating/cooling, steering responsive LED headlights with automatic high beam, tire pressure sensors, and of course, the Subaru EyeSight driver assist system.

The best bit is that for the U.S. market, the all-new Subaru Crosstrek retains its starting price. This bodes well for other markets, including the Philippines which is expected to get the all-new version of the compact crossover sometime this year.
