EVs Sweep 2023 Canadian Car Of The Year Awards

Two battery electric vehicles ended up as the big winners at the 2023 Canadian Car of the Year awards. The BMW i4 bagged the 2023 Canadian Car of the Year award, while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 won the 2023 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year.

More than 1,700 ballots were cast by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). The cars were selected by the jurors through their year-round testing and assessment of eligible vehicles supplemented by a “test fest” where additional evaluations of current models are made based on real-world testing.

AJAC jurors then use a detailed rating form, comprising various evaluation parameters that include acceleration, braking, vehicle dynamics, maneuverability, even off-road capability, where applicable.

Aside from being awarded as the Best Utility Vehicle, the Ioniq 5 also managed to bag the Best EV for 2023.

As a brand, Hyundai is the only one to score two category wins in 2023 with the Elantra N being voted as the Best Sports Performance car.

Another notable winner is the Mazda3 which managed to wrestle the Best Small Car award away from the Honda Civic (last year’s winner). It is the third time the Mazda3 to win that category.
