Geely Is Now Philippines' 8th Best-Selling Car Brand As 2022 Sales Rise 52 Percent

Geely Philippines ended 2022 with a 52 percent year-on-year sales growth. The Chinese carmaker sold 9,302 units, enabling it to gain one spot in terms of overall industry sales (eighth) with a 2.6 percent market share of the Philippine market.

The Coolray remains to be the top-selling model in the Geely line-up with 4,370 units sold which accounts for a 36 percent increase year-on-year. This is followed by the Okavango with 3,041—an increase of 19 percent. The Emgrand, meanwhile sold 1,458 units, while the sole variant of the Azkarra sold 433—a 35 percent improvement compared to 2021.

Based on the CAMPI report, the industry saw a significant growth in SUVs and MPVs at around 65 percent and 58 percent, respectively. Sojitz G Auto Philippines (SGAP) Corporation President & CEO Yugo Kiyofuji said, “Geely’s overall sales performance in 2022 has definitely benefited from the popularity and increased demand for bigger vehicles last year wherein more buyers shifted to SUVs and MPVs.”

That said, the Emgrand’s notable sales performance enabled Geely to become the sixth best-selling passenger car (PC) brand with a market share of 3.8 percent.

Geely’s strong performance in the Philippines is echoed globally as total 2022 sales of the automaker reached 1,432,988 units—a year-on-year increase of 8 percent. It’s the sixth consecutive year that Geely’s annual sales topped one million units.

Export sales to 27 countries reached 106,431 units—a 45 percent year-on-year increase. Based on this figure, the Philippines accounts for around 8.73 percent of Geely’s global sales.

“We are facing the new year with a greater outlook not only for Geely but also for the country’s whole car industry given the significant improvement in the overall industry sales in 2022. As we target to sell five digits this year, we remain focused to further expand our network especially on growth areas. This is also an exciting time for Geely as we aim to introduce more models that will continue to change the game in its respective segments,” Kiyofuji added.

    1. They haven't revealed anything yet. MG isn't part of CAMPI or AVID--the two industry organizations.

  2. Is Okavango exempted from the number coding scheme?

    1. For now yes, but Geely refuses to officially acknowledge it because they know that the EVIDA law can be changed anytime. In fact there are now calls to remove mild hybrids from the list of qualified vehicle types.

  3. Good for them. But it doesn't change the fact that its reliability is still unknown

    2. Says who? Geely Coolray owner since January 2020, and I have not face any issue with regards to reliability. So, where do you base this comment?

    3. In fairness to new car company like Geely, this will only be known 5-10 yrs later and with more users of such vehicles. Those who risk buying at early stage for cheaper price will reap the benefits once reliability is proven after certain period of time. By the time the reliability is proven, prices will shoot up and will be at par with Jap car companies. And then the same rant goes on that they are too greedy because they are aligning their prices with the Jap cars.

    5. Anonymous at Feb 5 9;50PM got caught lying, changing 2023 to 2020. Anyway, Geely is pretty reliable and among the most trusted brands in china (i think theres even an article here in carguide), if we are getting the same models from china then expect roughly the same reliablity. Real question i think is service, but then again it greatly varies even among the already established ones.

    6. Yah what a liar. Can't believe the lengths owners would go to just to defend their chinese car

  4. Geely targeted 10,000 units sold for 2022 and they missed it. Greedy pricing & unexplained 100k to 300k price increases for a relatively newcomer in the market. I hope the market realizes Geely vehicles now are way overpriced and backed by a Japanese conglomerate which i showing its greed in terms of pricing.

  5. For those of you who have been living under a rock and hasnt done world travels and working abroad, Geely has been around since 1998. Thats 25 years.
The first geely emgrand in oman is till running well up to today with more than 600k kms done..
Go to the middle east and find out for yourselves..
If these cars made it thru the hot humid deserts out there, its a walk in the park here in terms of reliability.
