The Newest Danger On The Road? Aggressive Cyclists

As more people embrace cycling as a means to get around, it’s had an unforeseen consequence: cyclist aggression. This is putting more lives at risk, according to research conducted by UK-based road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart.

Based on a survey of 2,010 UK motorists on driving safety and behavior, they discovered that almost two thirds (65 percent) of respondents believe that aggressive cyclists are a threat to their personal safety, while 78 percent considered people driving a motor vehicle aggressively as a threat to personal safety.

The survey also revealed that the problem is seen to be worsening on both sides, with six-in-ten (60 percent) of those surveyed believing that aggressive cyclists are a bigger problem compared to three years ago, and 63 percent believing that aggressive motorists have become more of an issue over the same time period.

Aggressive driving is also a contributory factory to road collisions—equating to 1 in 12 deaths on the road last year in the UK alone.

There is no quick-fix to this issue, but this research sheds light on the urgent need for the government to maintain its education campaigns proper road use, and continue to invest in safe road markings for more vulnerable road users to minimize the chance of conflict wherever possible. In the meantime, all road users, whether on two or four wheels, should exercise calmness and restraint to help everyone use roads safely.

  2. The study obviously fails to cite any increased motoring injury or deaths due to aggressive cyclists. Probably because it doesn’t happen and this entire angle is a complete joke.

  3. I am a Metro Cebu resident. I am on the road 2-3 hours a day. My number one irritant are the aggressive and reckless motorcycle drivers. They are considered by many to be the road menace. The infamous kings of the road. Most of them do not follow traffic rules. They cut, counterflow, swerve, bully other drivers, etc., you name it... For us driving the four-wheeled vehicles, road courtesy is not in their vocabulary. What is the government doing about this?

  4. Wow, a 75kg guy on a 15kg bike is scaring a 100kg guy in a 2.5-ton metal enclosure. How scary.
