The country’s only one-make sports car series returns. Mazda Philippines and the Manila Sports Car Club (MSCC) announces the 2023 season of the MSCC Miata Spec Series. As the official race event of the country’s premier sports car owners club, this year will have 22 racers all driving track-tuned Mazda MX-5 open-top sports cars.
“After the success of the MSCC Miata Spec Series last year, we couldn’t wait to get going again this 2023,” shares Steven Tan, President and CEO of Mazda Philippines. “This one-make format provides a unique opportunity for MSCC members to polish their skills and enjoy the pure essence of driving that only an MX-5 can provide.”
Allan Uy, the inaugural season’s overall champion returns for the 2023 season to defend his crown. His closest rivals—Angie King and Tyson Sy will both return as will Master Class Champion Windy Imperial and Novice Class Champion Jamal Almario. Joining the grid this year are Red Diwa, Tonypet Albano, and Manny Eduque.
Aside from the bigger grid, the 2023 MSCC Miata Spec Series will race at two venues: the Clark International Speedway (CIS) and the Batangas Racing Circuit (BRC). The first two legs, slated on April 15 and June 24, will happen at BRC, while the final two legs, scheduled for August 26 and October 28, will be done at the CIS.
The 2023 MSCC Miata Spec Series is sponsored by Pilipinas Shell, GT Radial, and B.R.M. Chronographes.
As a major business partner of Mazda Philippines since 2013, Pilipinas Shell supplies fully synthetic Shell Helix Ultra Professional lubricants to the Mazda Philippines dealership network. Since then, that partnership has deepened when Shell fuels becoming the recommended fuel to all Mazda customers and their fleet of vehicles. For the 2023 MSCC Miata Spec Series, the synergy between Shell’s most advanced fuel, Shell V-Power and the high-performance MX-5 is nothing short of perfect.
Meanwhile, the Giti Tire group, represented by its exclusive Philippine distributor, Northern Automax Intersales Inc., will equip every MSCC Miata Spec Series MX-5 with its race-winning GT Radial Champiro SX2. The tire has proven itself a race winner, garnering titles, and accolades over years of competition.
A new partner for 2023, B.R.M. Chronographes will serve as the MSCC Miata Spec Series’ official timekeeper. Bernard Richards Manufacture (B.R.M.) is a watch brand that takes inspiration from automotive technology and motorsports. For over 25 years, B.R.M. Chronographes has combined a passion for racing with the business of watchmaking, producing over 2,000 pieces annually in northwestern France.
Inspired by the largest one-make grassroots race series in the world, the Mazda Spec Miata, the MSCC Miata Spec Series cars are all built from brand-new Mazda MX-5 Soft Top units. Achieving a similar high standard of tuning and performance, the MSCC Miata Spec Series race cars have been developed to ensure safe and enjoyable racing competition.
All MSCC Miata Spec Series cars will be raced with showroom stock Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter engines and six-speed Skyactiv manual transmissions. Each car’s suspension components have been upgraded and reinforced to maximize handling and performance on the track while ensuring drivability on the road.
