New Car Sales Rise 24.2 Percent In March

New car sales rose 24.2 percent in March compared to the same month a year ago, based on a joint report of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA). The CAMPI-TMA report shows that sales reached 36,880 units compared to 29,685 units in March 2022.

Per a CAMPI statement, the March sales performance is the second highest monthly performance in post-pandemic—after the 37,259 units recorded last December.

The high sales growth of the industry is attributable to thriving consumer demand for new motor vehicles as well as favorable economic conditions, the statement continued.

Month on month, March vehicle sales rose 19.3 percent from the 30,905 units sold in February.

Last month, the Commercial Vehicle (CV) segment led the industry, accounting for 73 percent of the total sales volume. Commercial Vehicle sales rose by 16.3 percent to 26,822 units in March. Broken down, sales of Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) increased by 10 percent to 20,644, while sales of Asian Utility Vehicles (AUVs) increased by 54.2 percent to 5,205. Light Truck sales rose by 9.2 percent to 453.

On the other hand, sales of Passenger Vehicles are up 51.8 percent to 10,058 units. The segment accounted for 27.27 percent of the month’s overall sales.

For the first quarter, vehicle sales of CAMPI-TMA members jumped by 30 percent to 97,284 from 74,754 in the same period in 2022.

Commercial vehicle sales increased by 28.5 percent to 72,531 in the Q1 2023. Sales of LCVs went up by 21.5 percent to 55,436, while AUV sales climbed by 73 percent to 14,688 units.

Passenger car sales rose by 35.1 percent to 24,753 units in the January to March period.

Mitsubishi had the second-biggest market share with 17,765 units in Q1 (18.26 percent), with March sales hitting 7,109 units.
