Hyundai is continuing to grow its SUV range with the first-ever Exter. Positioned below the Venue in both size and price, the 2024 Exter is a urban-centric SUV designed with the active and trendy in mind.
The full debut is slated for July, but Hyundai has gone ahead and showed off the Exter and some mechanical details prior to its launch. The A-segment SUV measures less than 4 meters long and could be sharing the same platform as the Korean market Casper.
The 2024 Exter continues with common Hyundai design themes such as the compound headlight design, although here, the LED graphics on the daytime running lights do not meet in the middle (aka the Stargazer). Instead, they are separate and H-shaped. The bumpers also integrate a unique EXTER emblem, skid plate-like design elements and a floating roof effect courtesy of a special pattern on the C-pillar. It also debuts a new color—Ranger Khaki.
Hyundai has confirmed that the Exter will use the same engines as the Indian market Aura and Grand i10 Nios. The range starts with a 1.2-liter Kappa 4-cylinder with 83 horsepower and 114 Nm. A bi-fuel version (gas/CNG) of the same engine makes 69 horsepower and 95 Nm of torque. The gasoline variant comes in either 5-speed manual or, get this, an automated manual transmission, while the bi-fuel comes exclusively mated to a manual.
Pricing is said to start at around 600,000 Indian rupees, which works out to about P 407,000. This could put it at around the same segment as the top-of-the-line S-Presso which tops out at 612,000 Indian rupees.
No word if Hyundai will export the Exter to other markets outside India. However, there are reports saying that it’s destined to be a global model targeting emerging markets.
Looks like a successor the Hyundai Matrix
