It’s official: the Volkswagen Group has inked a strategic cooperation with two Chinese automaker in a bid to accelerate its electrification offerings. Volkswagen is partnering with Xpeng, while luxury division, Audi is partnering with SAIC Motor.
Volkswagen’s partnership with Xpeng will result in the joint development of two VW EV models in the mid-sized category. These vehicles, which will be rolled out by 2026, will be “China-specific” models.
Although because of Volkswagen Philippines’ track record of sourcing vehicles from China as well as local distributor, Ayala Corporation’s pivot towards EVs, there’s a strong possibility that they will be offered here as well.
On the other hand, Audi’s partnership with SAIC Motor will enable the German premium automaker to quickly expand its EV offerings.
Audi did not reveal the current extent of their partnership, but these models will have “all parties contributing their respective core competences to the development effort.” Furthermore, the German automaker hasn’t ruled out the possibility of jointly development platforms with SAIC Motor.
