Toyota debuts the new 2024 Land Cruiser. Codenamed J250, it rides on the TNGA-F platform shared with its bigger brother, the Land Cruiser 300 and the Lexus GX. It starts retail sales in select markets by November this year.
Notably dropping the “Prado” name (for some markets, at least), the new 2024 Land Cruiser receives two distinct front ends. The so-called First Edition gets round LED headlights, while other variants get rectangular units. At the back, it gets squared-off taillights and the spare tire is now tucked underneath. “Made for purpose,” the Land Cruiser 250 gets a separate glass hatch which can be opened separately from the regular tailgate. All terrain tires are standard regardless of trim.
Size-wise, the 2024 Land Cruiser measures in at 4,920 mm in length (+100 mm), 1,980 mm in width (+95 mm), and 1,870 mm in height (+20 mm). Wheelbase is at 2,850 mm (+60 mm).
Powering the 2024 Land Cruiser is a turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder hybrid making 330 horsepower and 630 Nm of torque. What’s more, because of a 48-horsepower electric motor (mounted within the 8-speed automatic), it will have even better low-end power. Other markets get a non-hybrid version of the same engine making 281 horsepower and 430 Nm.
For entry-level models in select markets, there is also a 2TR-FE 2.7-liter 4-cylinder with 163 horsepower and 246 Nm. This engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic.
For fans of diesels, the Land Cruiser will be made available with a 2.8-liter turbodiesel. The 1GD-FTV, shared with the Hilux and Fortuner, retains with 204 horsepower, 500 Nm output, but will be electrified by 2025 (outputs remain the same). This engine also uses an 8-speed automatic.
Notably, this is the first Land Cruiser to get an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. This helps reduce the kickback that can occur over rough surfaces while also providing a more direct steering feel. Four wheel drive is standard and in the Land Cruiser 250, it has a selectable two-speed transfer case, an automatic slip center differential, and locking rear differential.
The Land Cruiser also has excellent off-road stats to back up the legendary name. It boasts of 221 mm of ground clearance, while approach, departure, and breakover angles are set at 31, 22, and 25 degrees. Crucially, many of the components are now tucked within the frame rail helping it clear over rocks and other obstacles.
The Land Cruiser will also come with low-speed crawl control, which handles throttle and brake application to allow the driver to focus on steering through obstacles, while Downhill Assist Control helps manage speed when descending steep grades.
Higher grades get a front sway bar disconnect (Stabilizer with Disconnection Mechanism or SDM) and a Multi-Terrain Select which offers bespoke settings for mud, rocks, and sand. The Multi-Terrain Monitor, meanwhile projects images of the trail in front of, beneath, and along the sides of the vehicle to help you place your wheels appropriately.
Separating it from its bigger brother, the new Land Cruiser goes for a more rugged interior. The Land Cruiser 250 uses soft-touch plastics on the upper dash and door panels. Elsewhere, a rubberized-coating gives it a more utilitarian flavor. Ventilated and heated leather seats are available as is a 12.3-inch center display.
In terms of safety, the 2024 Land Cruiser gets adaptive cruise control, lane centering, automatic emergency braking, lane departure prevention, and blind spot monitoring.

ReplyDeleteLike that they have gone full retro with this Prado; looks like they really want to target the Bronco and Wrangler off-road crowd with this one. However, this will probably mean an image change for the Prado since it has always been seen as a luxury car here. There is no "regular look" for this one yet with the regular Toyota logo with only the Heritage look and logos available.
ReplyDeleteThat said, how will TMP advertise the car here given the Prado name has been axed? When Filipinos think of Land Cruiser, they think of the big-boy LC300, not the Prado. TMP website lists the LC300 as just Land Cruiser. Will they transition to the code-name structure once the new 250-series Prado arrives?
I agree. This is quite a significant change for the Prado. I prefer the unassuming more luxury-bent design of the outgoing model tbh.

ReplyDeleteJapan as well, hence the headline. They call this as Land Cruiser 250 only. But I just learned na Australia keeps the Prado name. It will probably be the same here when it (or even an if given the philosophy change of this new-gen) arrives here.

Lalo kung wala nang v6, so mas tataas pa yan since naging 4-cylinders lang ang mga new engines na hindi naman pasok sa Jpepa (kelangan above 3000cc ang makina para walang tariff) if ever. Eh gahaman pa mga dealers ngayon, kaya sigurado magpapatong pa sila pag lumabas na rito yan next year.
DeleteThe round headlights look more true to the original, much like round headlights of old Range Rovers set in front of an upright nose and a body that's mostly flat panels, connote mud-wading capability. Toyota should make it the standard fit from the factory for this generation rather than limit it to early editions. Overall, this looks close to a perfect car - it can fulfill any mission, especially for Filipino families and I predict it will be the "it" car for aspiring families. I recall a 1990s song by a kid named Jaymie Baby around the time Mitsubishi Pajero reached its peak popularity, where at the end she pleaded "Mommy, bili mo 'ko ng Pajero!" If this LC can attain a similar influence on the collective Filipino consciousness, we might just hear someone sing "Mommy, bili mo 'ko ng Land Cruiser!"
