Ayala Corporation Takes Over BYD Distributorship In The Philippines


Ayala Corporation has finalized the deal to be the official Philippine distributor of BYD passenger vehicles, the world leader in hybrid and pure electric vehicles.

AC Motors head Jaime Alfonso Zobel de Ayala said, “This partnership between one of the largest multi-brand automotive groups in the Philippines and the world's leading EV brand is a cornerstone of the group’s goal of accelerating the future of mobility in the country.”

“Our long-term vision is for AC Motors to become the leading platform for EVs and other new energy vehicles in the Philippines. This includes building up BYD to become a key brand in the Philippine market, with leading share among EV brands and meaningful presence in the automotive market as a whole,” he added.

James Ng, Managing Director of BYD Philippines and Singapore said, “BYD looks forward to working hand-in-hand with Ayala to promote the development of new energy vehicles industry in The Philippines. Together, we create a greener, more sustainable and brighter future, as we embark on this exciting journey.”

Antonio “Toti” Zara will serve as BYD Philippines President. He is also the concurrent Head for Distribution and Retail for AC Motors.

Ayala has been prioritizing the electric mobility vehicles as the enabler of Ayala’s ecosystem. The group is uniquely positioned to provide long-term value to EV customers, given its assets in renewable power generation, automotive distribution and dealerships, property development and management, manufacturing, financing and insurance, and digital connectivity—all of which are critical components of the EV ecosystem.

Meanwhile, BYD has an expansive line-up of both passenger and commercial vehicles at competitive price points, allowing the vehicles to be deployed at a larger scale. Its operations as an automotive manufacturer are also fully integrated, with capabilities not only in designing and assembling the final vehicles, but even in battery technology, electric powertrain development, and semiconductors. In addition to the automotive space, BYD also has investments in rail transit, renewable energy, and battery storage.

Across BYD dealerships in the Philippines, Ayala will offer the luxury executive sedan, BYD Han; the spacious 7-seater family SUV, BYD Tang; and the compact hatchback, BYD Dolphin. By the end of this year, Ayala will also introduce the BYD Atto 3, a highly awarded EV model that is globally hailed for its outstanding design, comfort, quality, practicality, and performance.

All units will be sourced from China and will carry the GBT fast-charging standard. Ayala Corporation will provide owners with adapters allowing them to use CCS Type 2 chargers located around the Philippines.

“These are compelling models that target different market segments and allow us to promote EV adoption across a wide range of customers,” Zobel de Ayala said. “With BYD’s leading presence globally in EVs and given its recent success in other Southeast Asian markets, we at AC Motors aspire to build the same level of respect and relevance for the brand in the Philippines.”

  2. Good for BYD as Ayala's partner with it's massive capital but definitely it's no difference as to how compete in the market as AC motor management style . Selling price too much expensive.

  4. With the new management, hopefully Ayala will stop doing their business strategies similar to VW and Maxus. Sa Kia napa bakal ng introduction with the new modela sa market.

  5. AC Motors basically mismanaged their brands here, but it's a good pivot to focus on EVs. However, I haven't seen any car company focusing on the charging infrastructure first before introducing these electric vehicles. I don't think you can plug these cars at home without a special implement of sorts. I only saw one charging station in an Ortigas-based mall and you can park for free. But what if you go to the province where there are no charging facilities?

    1. I am not that sure pero kasama ata sa package yung adapter and home charger (slow charger, 8-hr period) pero yung fast charger yan typically naka install sa charging stations and malls.

    3. Not yet ready so we need mote adopters to adopt for the market to be ready. The more people will buy EVs, the faster the infrastructure for EVs will be built thus be ready.

  6. There are several charging stations in metro Manila you just need to buy an adapter. For the provinces just ask your friendly resort if you can change using a mobile charger that came with the car.

    1. Charging stations are few n far in between, For now its not enough due to heavy traffic, and also the perrenial flooding. But at least its a good start for EV's in ph.

  7. Better to start buying EVs now while it’s exempted from coding. Once majority are into EVs, coding for sure will comeback with a vengeances!

    1. For me personally i will just wait for EV's tech n EV infra here in ph to mature, its cost will surely go down, specially if dears already much competition. For now i will just go for much affordable n dependable hybrids.

  8. Most likely AC motors will drop Maxus.

    With their EV push, Kia VW & BYD will have those compelling products.

  10. IMHO. Chinese brands must must cap their prices to around 1.5m and below. Higher than that buyers tend to stick to established brands. Not to be discriminating but 2m for a car is normal nowaday. A pickup or body on frame suv all are selling near 2m. For now I wouldn't spend a lot for a Chinese car.

    1. Try the GAC GS8 and it might change your perspective. Although still the big question mark is the reliability. The brand's already got the backing of a strong distributor, though.

    BYD produces EV vehicles that are selling very well in Asian region
    People who are afraid of it are the Toyota fanboys as they can't accept the fact that the hydrogen technology that Toyota pushes failed miserably and Toyota lagged behind EV technology.
