Expressways To Go Completely Cashless; Motorists Advised To Get RFIDs


After putting it off for three years now, Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) says they will start removing cash lanes on September 1 in favor of using purely Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) stickers.

Aside from removing cash lanes, MPTC also plans to implement “barrier-less” entry and exit to speed up traffic that typically builds up at their expressways. MPTC holds the concession for the North Luzon Expressway, the Subic-Clark Tarlac Expressway, NLEX Connector Road, Manila-Cavite Expressway, Cavite-Laguna Expressway and the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway in Cebu.

MPTC hopes to fully transition to a fully cashless system at all of its toll roads by the end of 2024.

At present, around 75 percent of motorists are already using the RFID system to pay for their tolls. These RFID stickers remain free.

Motorists who do not have enough balance in their RFID account will be monitored through their license plates and will be charged when they register their vehicles.

Separately, San Miguel Corporation president Ramon Ang also said that they would also remove cash lanes upon approval of regulators.

SMC holds the concession for the South Luzon Expressway, Skyway, NAIA Expressway, Star Tollway, Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway, and the Muntinlupa-Cavite Expressway.

  1. This does not make sense. If you seldom go to their expressways, it is pointless to get an RFID tag from them. For example, i live in bulacan. i go to batangas for a vacation once every 3-4 years.

  4. It’s makes more sense for toll operators, they earn interest palang from unused cash at RFID account. NLEX meron Php 80.00 top up fee pa.

Alam nyo kung anong mas non-sense yun mga taong na can afford to buy a car but unwilling to spend a few pesos e.g., 500 pesos maski pa seldom mo gamitin yun saksakyan, I even see luxury car owners na nakapila sa cash lane, mapapakamot ka na lang ako ng ulo mo pag nakita mo ang mahal ng kotse pero walang load yun rfid. These non sense people are the ones actually causing traffic kasi kinakain din nila yun ibang lane. Ano ba naman mag load ka ng 500 sa rfid mo maski pa minsan mo lang magamit hindi naman mawawala yun 500 mo andun pa din sa credit mo, unless you are an ordinary jeepney driver na mahigpit ang pangangailangan which these car owners are not.

    1. i think it is a matter of getting the RFIDs, not loading the RFIDs.

    2. Based on experience you have to shell out an initial 200 pesos which is then credited to your account. Also, from time to time the system (I am talking about SMC managed tollways) will allow you to pass through even if you have insufficient funds, next time you top up it will then be deducted.

      I use the Skyway once or twice a week to get to my destination faster and I always see these car owners who opts to pay in cash rather than go cashless and they are the ones causing long queues even to the point of clogging other lanes.

      There will come a time in the near future that these toll booths will be unmanned and fully automated, these backward thinking car owners will have no other choice but go cashless as well, heck if they still complain they can always use either east or west service roads for free and enjoy the heavy traffic.

  6. I am also a motorist who seldom use the expressways. I always wanted to get these RFID but it's very difficult to find the places where they do the isntallations.
    My take on these RFID is that, it has to be unified first to make things simple. Second, there has to be a way to link your account to your credit card so you never have to worry whether you have a load or not. They will just have to bill you through credit card facility. That will in my opinion makes things seamless.

If the toll operators were truly serious about ETC adoption, they would adopt a PAYGO system where users will only be billed as they use the toll roads, akin to a utility bill, rather than the current prepaid system in place. Expecting all road users to always maintain a balance is an added barrier of entry, no pun intended.

  10. Paano naman si mang isko na taga probinsya na gusto lang bumisita sa anak nyang nag aaral para mabigyan ng allowance. Kelangan pa nyang mag rfid sa jeep nya?

    1. What an improbable use case just appealing to emotion. People in provinces already own a cellphone with mobile data and can easily send money through apps. There's also money remit centers and rural banks.
      If mang isko is too old to learn new tech, then why the F does he even attempt to travel far adding to the possibility that the jeep is old, improperly maintained and might break down in the middle of the road? Senseless comments like this really irk me.

    2. Lol, the private toll operators only hold concessions to operate and maintain the expressways. Ultimately, the roads they operate belong to the government, ergo the public. Tollways operate as a utility, just like Meralco, PLDT, etc. What would you say if you can"t pay for any of your utility bills in cash? Whether you like it or not, this move by the TRB will marginalize some. That's a big no-no if you're operating a public utility like our nation's roads.

    3. Also, I'm old enough to remember when the NLEX and SLEX were operated and maintained by the government and using them was completely free. The government only handed O&M concessions to these roads to the private sector in the mid-2000s. Mind-blowing for the young, I know.

  12. service road nalang kung walang RFID. dami ninyo (pro/against) pareparehas na satsat. hindi lang naman skyway pwedeng daanan eh. konting utak sana gamitin baka mapanis. 🤣🤣🤣 hahaha
