Toyota Motor Philippines is adding a new compact crossover that serves as a shot across the bow of its competition, particularly the burgeoning number of Chinese small SUVs. Meet the first-ever Yaris Cross.
What is the Yaris Cross?
Sandwiched between the Raize sub-compact SUV and the Corolla Cross compact crossover, the Yaris Cross is a compact crossover designed specifically to cater to the requirements of markets such as the Philippines and the rest of ASEAN.
It uses a global platform also by the Raize and Veloz. Like those two SUVs, the Yaris Cross will also be sourced from Indonesia. Dimensionally, it measures 4,310 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, and 1,615 mm tall. Its 2,620 mm equates to one of the roomiest cabins in its class. Toyota also touts a rocker panel height of 260 mm (212 mm minimum ground clearance), an approach angle of 19 degrees, and a departure angle of 28 degrees making it suitable for light trails.
What are the variants, prices, and colors?
For the Philippine market, the Yaris Cross comes in three variants: the 1.5 G, 1.5 V, and the 1.5 S HEV. For colors, it comes in five colorways: Platinum White Mica (1.5 V), Attitude Black Mica (1.5 G), Greenish Gun Metal Mica Metallic (1.5 G), Scarlet SE (1.5 G), and Dark Turquoise SE (1.5 V). The 1.5 S HEV comes only in a two-tone paint scheme with an Attitude Black Mica roof and three main body colors: Platinum White Mica, Scarlet SE, and Dark Turquoise SE.

This is mated to a Dual Mode or D-CVT system. This “split-gear” system promotes fuel efficiency, quietness, and acceleration feel compared to other CVT types. The highlight, however, is an electrified 1.5-liter. The 2NR-VEX pairs a 91 horsepower, 121 Nm gasoline engine with a powerful 80 horsepower, 141 Nm electric motor. Combined, it delivers a total system output of 111 horsepower. It uses a more conventional CVT system.

Oh, and get this: the Yaris Cross uses a compact lithium-ion battery which means it’s even more advanced than the other Toyota hybrids. Placed under the rear passenger seat, there’s no compromise to interior room and cargo space.
Anything interesting about the exterior?
In terms of design, the Yaris Cross adopts the concept of “Solid & Dynamic.” For that, it’s all about giving it a chiseled exterior. It features a large trapezoidal grille, slim LED headlights and taillights. 17-inch rims come as standard on the 1.5 G, growing to 18 inches on the 1.5 V and the top-of-the-line 1.5 S HEV.
How about the interior?
Inside, the Yaris Cross takes on a familiar cabin design first seen in the Raize and Veloz. The wide, horizontally-laid out dashboard promotes both space and ergonomics. Standard features include a 7-inch TFT gauge cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six speakers, wireless charger, push-button engine start-stop with keyless entry, automatic climate control with rear vents, and even an electronic parking brake with auto hold. Moving up to the 1.5 V, it has an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, and a hands-free power tailgate. A Pioneer sound system, panoramic sunroof, Drive Mode Select are reserved for the 1.5 S HEV.
Safety doesn’t take a backseat either since all variants get a full set of airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control, hill start assist, and parking sensors on both front and rear ends. Both the 1.5 V and 1.5 S HEV builds up on that with the complete Toyota Safety Sense suite (Pre-Collision System, Automatic High Beam, Lane Tracing Assist, Lane Keeping Assist) as well as a panoramic view monitor and blind spot indicators with rear cross traffic alert.

DeleteIs it a good price for the hybrid? 1.6m, which is 300k premium over the V and you get the hybrid engine, panoramic roof, pioneer speakers and drive select mode. It that 300k worth it? Its also same platform with raize, not tnga.
ReplyDeleteThis is something to consider as well given it is just 80k off the Corolla Cross V Hybrid (which rides on a legit Toyota platform). Yaris to Yaris, the fact that it is a legit hybrid is more than enough to justify the price diff. But Yaris relative to other models, I am not so sure. The only thing that this model will have going for it is if supply is more readily available. I will wait for full reviews to see if the 1.6 million price tag for Toyota's "most affordable hybrid" is worth it. As it stands, Toyota imho hasn't brought the price down enough.

It also feels like its only price like this because of the competition, if for example, the nissan kicks was ~1.5, this would have been too. Im the anon guy above, just from my phone.

DeleteToyota is acknowledging the presence of the Chinese brands, this is specced and priced very competitively. This is proof that you can have good features with good reliability at a good price, which Toyota before insisted that it wasn't possible. Good job Toyota PH!
ReplyDeleteIt was always possible, Toyota just didn't want to do it until the Chinese came and grabbed the attention of people. The Yaris cross still can't beat the Chinese brands in terms of styling both for the exterior and interior, and features, but for a Toyota I have to admit they've not done a bad job.

ReplyDelete212 mm is the minimum ground clearance. 260 mm is the clearance between the ground and the rocker panel. Although in the original spec sheet, it was indicated at 260 mm. TMP also issued a correction.

I think you need to check with the agency in charge of accreditation. Not all HEV were approved for exemption in coding.

I seem to recall the Raize having iffy crash test results. It was eventually corrected, but it did leave quite a blackeye to Toyota's reputation for safety.

@sky_h1ghr, uhm what are you talking about? The Perodua Ativa is the same as the Raize and Rocky. Perodua is partly owned by Toyota through Daihatsu (25%). The Ativa has the same components and underpinnings as the Raize and Rocky. The ASEAN NCAP results of the Perodua Ativa is also for the Raize and Rocky.
DeleteEverything is looking good for the price. Sana maganda na rin ang quality ng interior, rattles and inconsistent panel gaps are unacceptable at this price. Maybe ok lang sa Raize or Avanza or Wigo, but for this, the interior should be solidly built.

DeleteIce engines maybe, Chinese cars will struggle against established American and Japs brands which have very long history behind the badge and brand. It will take them decades to catch up no matter how good they can make their cars the nameplate matters. That's why China realized they can leapfrog these legacy brands thru the EV revolution. HEV more expensive by 300k, mmm you're practically paying extra for that puny batt and that useless moon roof. Just wait for the tons of Chinese ev coming in soon. It's a better option than buying the more complex hybrids motors which could mean costlier maintenance down the road.

Your right! Initial purchase cost of china cars are less than proven established brands, but later china cars will cost u more for cost of repair n maintenance(also head aches due to reliability/durability issues.). And very low resale value
DeleteLet us all be thankful that other people are willing to buy and test these Chinese cars. They will get to enjoy the low price and if lucky, won't have much trouble with it. Eventually, like the Korean cars, the Chinese cars will improve their quality and durability. What's important is they provide competition to the established players and improve the market based on price and selection, for us buyers.
