Despite all the hoopla surrounding the rigged safety test of the all-new Vios, the fourth-generation sub-compact sedan still managed to score perfect at the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program or ASEAN NCAP.
To recall, last April, the Vios (and by extension, even the Raize and Wigo) were caught in a falsified crash safety test scandal. While these were for two separate issues, they were outed by a whistleblower and a subsequent audit.
For the Vios, the affected samples were found to have been modified with a notch. This would minimize the risk during side-impact testing that the door interior would break with a sharp edge and cause injury to an occupant when the side airbag deployed in an accident.
The issue was so drastic that Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda personally apologized for the issue. Since then, Toyota worked to re-engineer the Vios while also deciding not to have units recalled since they already confirm to the UN-R95 side-impact test. That’s been proven true with the all-new Vios’ 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.
Tested using the more comprehensive 2021-2025 protocol, the Vios scored 35.25 out of 40 in Adult Occupant Protection and 16.64 out of 20 in Child Occupant Protection. With a high level of advanced safety technologies fitted, it also managed 16.08 out of 20 in Safety Assist and 10.73 out of 20 in Motorcyclist Safety.
For those who are curious, the Vios’ Adult Occupant Protection scores is broken down to 14.56 out of 20 in offset frontal test, 6.64 out of 10 in Side Impact Test, and 7 out of 10 in Head Protection. The relatively low side impact rating is due to the “Weak” score it received for driver chest protection.
Still, the Vios scored 78.70 making it eligible for a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating.
So.. dis is a Daihatsu?
ReplyDeleteDNGA
DeleteIt'll get a Perodua version in Malaysia soon.
Perodua is partially owned by Daihatsu
Common weakness of DNGA vehicles are its weak side impact structural rigidity.
ReplyDeleteSeems Toyota and Daihatsu cut costs in this area.
Raize,Veloz and Xenia all got caught with the same problem
Toyota and Daihatsu should address this safety issue.
Didn't they already do that? Also it still scored a 5 star rating.
DeleteDaihatsu Xenia (Avanza) only scored 3 stars at ASEAN NCAP
DeleteLots of people in Toyotas die in a major accident. Vehicles in these accidents are wigo, vios, rush and innova. Not safe vehicles.
ReplyDeleteVIos used to have 7 airbags as standard on all variants but they've decided to cut costs.
DeleteRush is based on a 12 year old platform so its outdated already.
Them cheap Daihatsus and their falsified safety tests, who would believe this 5 star anymore.
ReplyDeleteThat's why Daihatsu didn't continue to make and sell cars in the USA and Canada after the former left those markets in 1992, Daihatsu too also left Europe twenty to twenty-one years later, because the cars were too small at the same time they were too unsafe for both markets and thirty-one years later Daihatsu even suffer the same fate as before — its totally another sign of failure for Toyota along with their establishment of Lexus (1989) and Scion (2003-2016) and so far it seems Toyota needed more partnerships following its ex-CEO (Akio Toyoda) for riding a hybrid Honda crossover in Japan.
ReplyDeleteAs while Toyota's fellow Japanese carmakers Nissan and Mitsubishi have already committed to maintain their ties with France's Renault, it seems that if the latter were to try selling off Nissan and Mitsubishi to Toyota's hands then given that Renault already has a partnership with China's Geely means Toyota (along with Nissan) may just trade Daihatsu (and Mitsubishi for Nissan) for rebadging their emerging markets-only cars as Geely products... (Imagine if the Vios were a rebadged Emgrand then this means Daihatsu is gone like Ford did with Edsel and Mercury and General Motors with Geo, Oldsmobile and Pontiac.)
Nissan is likely to remain independent
DeleteMitsubishi Motors seems gonna try to be profitable but it's likely to be bought by GAC or Geely in the long run as the brand focused too much in SEA market with less profits earned.
Daihatsu became like Maruti Suzuki now which focused more on 3rd world countries like Indonesia..Toyota refused to sell the Daihatsu brand in India and Pakistan in order not to create conflict with Suzuki in those markets
Daihatsu and Suzuki both left Chinese market as both car brands refused to invest money in developing more modern and much safer vehicles for Chinese market.
80% of Vios sales won't have ADAS... so it only means its not really safe for adults. 5-star NCAP applies only for TOTL models with full airbag and ADAS.
