The all-new Mitsubishi Triton nabbed a 5-star safety rating at the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program or ASEAN NCAP. Tested under the stricter 2021-2025 protocols, the Triton, specific to the Philippine market, scored 74.71 out of 100—enough for the agency’s coveted rating.
In terms of Adult Occupancy Protection, the Triton scored 32.52 out of 40. The model, fitted surprisingly with just three airbags, managed good protection to most body parts of the two front occupants. The agency said the cabin itself remained stable, although the driver’s right lower leg received just marginal protection, while the passenger had only adequate protection to the chest and right lower leg area.
The sturdiness of the passenger area also showed as the Triton managed to ace the side-impact test with good levels of protection all around.
When it comes to Child Occupant Protection, the Triton scored 17.54 out of 20 perfecting all but the “Vehicle Based” rating. And this is down to the Triton’s nature as a pickup truck which makes putting child seats in and out of the second row much more difficult (9 out of 13).
Meanwhile, when it comes to Safety Assist Technology, the Triton scored 14.44 out of 20. It scored perfect in “Effective Braking & Avoidance” thanks to its standard anti-lock braking system and electronic stability control. As for the rest, the ASEAN NCAP says it meets their requirements, especially the functionality and effectiveness of its Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system for both stationary objects (AEB City) and moving objects (AEB Inter-Urban). The Triton was docked points here simply because the SAT systems isn’t standard across the range.
Finally, when it comes to Motorcyclist Safety, the Triton scored 10.22 out of 20. The Blind Spot Detection system worked well enough as did the Pedestrian Protection. However, it didn’t manage a higher score because the model tested didn’t have any sort of Advanced Rear Visualization.
Per ASEAN NCAP: “In 2023, the new Mitsubishi Triton underwent a more stringent ASEAN NCAP assessment covering four assessment categories: AOP, COP, Safety Assist, and Motorcyclist Safety. It made an impressive performance in the assessment under the 2021-2025 protocols by achieving 5-Star rating in all categories.”
All new cars should get 5 star safety ratings, especially under the lenient ASEAN NCAP (Looking at the Xpander with 4 stars LMAO, I also think that the Xforce using the same platform will also only get a 4-star rating)
