Is Mazda PH Finally Launching The Updated CX-5 In 2024?

Better late than never. It seems Mazda is poised to upgrade the entire CX-5 line-up three years after other markets, including North America and Japan received it.

The Philippine market may have been enjoying the updated CX-5 (internally known in Mazda as ‘IPM6’) since the launch of the CX-5 2.5 Turbo in 2022, but the rest of the line-up has remained unchanged until now. Based on news coming from Malaysia’s PaulTan.org and The Edge, Bermaz Auto is prepping their CKD assembly plant in Kulim for a January 2024 reveal.

So far, Bermaz Auto has kept mum on details surrounding the 2024 update, but based on The Edge’s report, this latest iteration of the CX-5 will come with a price increase.

Separately, in a series of leaked documents, the 2024 CX-5 echoes the Japan-assembled CX-5 2.5 Turbo in terms of looks, gaining a new front grille and bumper, signature LED headlights, 17- or 19-inch alloy wheels, and taillights. Auto folding mirrors and new badges complete the exterior changes.

Polymetal Gray and Platinum Quartz join the available colorways. Surprisingly, for those opting for white, Snowflake White is still listed as the shade and not Rhodium White.

Inside, the 2024 CX-5 will now come with LED interior lights, a wireless device charger, and wireless Apple CarPlay for its 8-inch Mazda Connect display audio. Paddle shifters and front seat ventilation complete the updates per the documents.

Aside from the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, the 2024 CX-5 will retain its normally-aspirated 2.5- and 2.5-liter gasoline engines as well. These will be mated to a 6-speed automatic driving either the front and all four wheels via the i-Activ AWD system. New for 2024 is GVC Plus which adds torque vectoring by braking.

In terms of safety, the 2024 CX-5 will add Hill Brake Control, Smart Brake Support, Mazda Radar Cruise Control, and Cruising & Traffic Support to its comprehensive suite of i-Activsense safety features.

With Malaysia poised to launch the updated CX-5 soon, it is just a matter of time before the Philippines gets the refreshed model as well. Remember, the Kulim assembly plant is where the country sources its CX-5 along with its three-row derivative, the CX-8 which will continue production there until 2026.

  1. Without any hybrid variant, i think Mazda CX-5 is at disadvantage vis-a-vis Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4

  2. How many times does Mazda update the CX5? I believe this is just an excuse to jack up the price.

  4. Uly, will the refreshed CX5 get ADAS even when running slower than 30kmh? How does Mazda Safety Sense compare to Honda Sensing, Toyota Safety Sense, and Subaru Eyesight? How do you rack them from best to not so good?

    1. Unknown what sort of i-Activsense we'll be getting, but in other countries it finally does operate at all speeds.

As for safety systems, I would rank them:

      1. Subaru EyeSight
      2. Honda SENSING
      3. Mazda i-Activsense
      4. Toyota Safety Sense

    1. Based on our tests:

      CX-5 2.0 2WD Sport - 10.3 km/L
      CX-5 2.5 AWD Sport - 7.8 km/L
      CX-5 Turbo - 7.8 km/L

  6. I'm looking forward to the 2.0 Li and 2.5 Li FWD non turbo variants of the CX5. Mazda PH should make the complete Active Mazda Sense standard across all CX5 variants. Hopefully, they still stay below the 2m mark.
