Subaru is using the upcoming Tokyo Auto Salon to launch the WRX STI Sport# (Sport Sharp). Not to be confused with the all-out WRX STI, the WRX STI Sport# is basically a STI Lite—similar to BMW’s M Sport and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG Line models.
Based on the JDM WRX S4 STI Sport R EX, Subaru says the upcoming WRX STI Sport# will feature “enhanced stable handling and premium drive feel.” Of course, final details will be revealed on January 12, when the Tokyo Auto Salon officially opens, but expect the WRX STI Sport# to get features mirrored by the North American WRX TR model.
If that’s the case, the WRX STI Sport# will have stiffer springs and dampers thanks to the retuned electronically controlled dampers. It will also have a revised steering rack. It will probably also share the larger Brembo brakes with six pistons upfront and two pistons out back. And to clear the massive brakes, it will likely have upsized wheels too—19s from 18s with 245/35R19 tires.
Those looking for additional grunt, will be slightly disappointed if past WRX STI Sport# models are any indication. They typically don’t get additional power, so the 2.4-liter FA24DIT will keep the same 275 horsepower, 375 Nm outputs as the standard WRX. It will probably use a retuned version of the Subaru Performance Transmission CVT.
In Japan, the WRX S4 STI Sport R EX already receives external STI badging, black/red Recaro seats, and an optional high-style wing. Based on the teaser, the WRX STI Sport# still doesn’t have this, and will instead retain the more subdued ducktail spoiler together with high-gloss black accents applied to the badging, aero appendages and side mirrors. It’s unknown if Subaru will drop the controversial black fenders on the WRX STI Sport#.
Typically, the WRX STI Sport# models are JDM only and are sold in limited numbers.
