While most modern Chinese cars seem to ace global safety tests such as the ASEAN NCAP, ANCAP, and the Euro NCAP, that standard doesn’t seem to apply to the MG 5 (MG GT in the Philippines).
At its most recent Australasian New Car Assessment Program or ANCAP test, the sporty-looking sub-compact sedan managed a dismal zero-star rating.
The reason for the MG 5 / MG GT’s poor test result is down to its Adult Occupancy Protection (AOP) score which was just 15.09 out of 40. It scored zero in Frontal Offset, Full Width, and Far-Side Impact crash tests. It also scored zero in front passenger Whiplash Protection.
Per its ANCAP assessment, the MG recorded significant injury risk measurements for the chest (Poor) and legs (Poor) of the driver in the frontal offset test, and the chest (Poor) and legs (Poor) of the rear passenger in the full width frontal test. Penalties were applied for chest deflection and seatbelt loading exceeding injury limits, and hazards behind the dashboard structure.
The rating which is valid for all MG 5 / MG GT variants sold in Australia is fitted with a full set of airbags—dual front, side chest, and side-head airbags. However, emergency pre-tensioners are not fitted to its seatbelts.
Meanwhile, the MG 5 / MG GT managed a 28.81 out of 49 in Child Occupancy Protection and 26.78 out of 63 in Vulnerable Road User Protection.
In terms of Safety Assist Technology, it managed just 2.48 out of 18 with ANCAP regulators stating the MG 5 / MG GT lacking seatbelt minders to the second row, driver monitoring, autonomous emergency braking for junctions and head-on traffic, and any form of lane keep assist.
In its official report, the ANCAP said, “The MG 5 was released into the Australasian market for the first time this year, yet it’s clear that their safety offerings are some generations behind what we see with almost every new car on sale today.”
“This is a stark reminder that not all cars offer the same level of safety – even when they’re brand new models.”
In terms of China-made small cars, the ANCAP rates the BYD Dophin, GWM Ora 03, and MG 4 with five stars.

ReplyDeleteLiteral DEATH TRAP
ReplyDeleteAs expected! meanwhile a gamer love very much and move heaven and earth to promote here china cars including MG. its good that no one believes in him, He must be...💔💔💔
ReplyDeleteThis is the reason why Toyota won't sell the DNGA vehicles in Australia as it'll expose that their vehicles are unsafe just like Mitsubishi that refused to sell the Xpander and Xforce in Australia.
ReplyDeleteMG GT in the Philippine market is much safer as it got better safety features like AEB.
Affordable DNGA is for ASEAN only, TNGA for global market. I think its a brilliant market strategy, proof is on sales figure
DeleteDNGA after all is meant for the emerging markets which includes us in the ASEAN, and not for developed markets like Australia.
DeleteYou didn't understand the article. The poor rating was the result of the passenger cage not sufficiently protecting passengers in frontal and side impacts, notwithstanding the advanced driver assistance and safety features fitted in the car.
DeleteChina as usual will put a spin on this by saying zero stars is the best and 5 is the worst.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to buying cars, it's still best to buy the tried and tested ones. Discounting yourself could result in discounting your life.
ReplyDeleteIf a car fails safety tests, will they be prohibited fm sales in the Phils.
ReplyDeleteIf that's your logic then Suzuki vehicles,Isuzu Traviz,Mitsubishi L300 FB,Toyota Avanza and Toyota Vios should be banned.😂
DeleteOh what about those dilapidated jeeps running, are they safe
DeletePhil market is not that sophisticated to look at safety ratings so it's up to car brands to educate. Dito free seat cover at tint nagkakatalo na sa sales lalo na wading depth kaya lusungin baha.
ReplyDeleteThe number 1 safety of a car is the driver
ReplyDeleteWhat else can we expect fm chinese cars?
ReplyDeleteSome of them are 5 stars. But they're useless in the long run since it has no parts
DeleteMine is MG EURO ZT I think good lot of safety features and cheaper very nice.
DeleteYayyyy, got mine 3 days ago. This is sad
ReplyDeletegood car just meet an accident
ReplyDeleteThis is not the MG GT that is being sold in the PH
