Porsche has smashed the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record for EV sedans, lapping the 20.8-kilometer circuit in 7 minutes and 7.55 seconds. This is some 18 seconds faster than the previous record holder, the Telsa Model S Plaid with an optional track pack and 26 seconds than the Taycan Turbo S with the performance package.
The pre-series Taycan, piloted by Porsche development driver Lars Kern is rumored to be the upcoming Taycan GT—a more track-focused version of Porsche’s all-electric sedan. The Taycan GT, seen in the photo, wears a more aggressive aero kit and lower suspension.
This puts this yet-to-be-announced Taycan in the same league as electric hyper cars. Even more impressive, Kerns says, is that this Taycan can do the same times over several laps.
For safety reasons, the test car was equipped with a mandated roll cage along with racing bucket seats.
Compared to the 2022 record in a Taycan Turbo S, the times were significantly better: the pre-series car was a good 25 km/h faster heading into the Schwedenkreuz. To illustrate the difference further, by the
time Kern crossed the finish line near Grandstand 13 (T13) this time, he would have only just been passing the entrance to the Nordschleife, about to enter the Antoniusbuche section, during his record drive in the Taycan Turbo S in 2022.
This put the distance between the pre-series Taycan and the current Turbo S at more than 1.3 kilometers—a figure that illustrates the leap in performance achieved on the course in Germany’s Eifel region.
An onboard video of the complete lap will be published in mid-March, likely coinciding with the global reveal of the Taycan GT.
