Refreshed 2024 Mazda CX-5 Makes ASEAN Appearance With More Power, Equipment


After getting leaked by the Malaysian press last December, Bermaz Motor has finally unveiled the Made in Malaysia refreshed CX-5 for 2024.

Like the Made in Japan CX-5 Turbo which the Philippines has been enjoying since 2022, this “IPM6” CX-5 gets a raft of cosmetic and mechanical changes—its most significant update since 2020. It sports a new grille and bumper, signature LED headlights, 17- or 19-inch alloy wheels, and taillights. Differentiating this versus the CX-5 Turbo though is that these variants continue to have matte-black wheel fenders and side skirts, regardless of variant.



Polymetal Gray and Platinum Quartz join the available colorways with the rest being Soul Red Crystal, Machine Gray, Deep Crystal Blue, Jet Black, and surprisingly, for those who want white, Snowflake White, and not Rhodium White. Zircon Sand remains an exclusive color for made in Japan units.

Underneath, the 2024 CX-5 gets slightly uprated engines. The 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G gets a slight power bump to 162 horsepower at 6,000 rpm (from 156 horsepower) and 213 Nm at 4,000 rpm (from 200 Nm). Meanwhile, the 2.5-liter normally-aspirated Skyactiv-G sees its figures go up to 192 horsepower at 6,000 rpm (from 190 horsepower) and 258 Nm at 4,000 rpm (from 252 Nm). The sole transmission remains the 6-speed Skyactiv Drive automatic with a manual shift mode and paddle shifters (except for the base model).

Together with the updated powertrain, the CX-5 now offers G-Vectoring Control Plus or GVC Plus as standard. An improvement to the original GVC system, it adds torque vectoring by braking for improved handling and control.

Inside, the 2024 CX-5 now comes with LED interior lights and a wireless charger to complement its 8-inch Mazda Connect display audio with wireless Apple CarPlay. The seats have also been redesigned to contour to the natural S-shape of the spine. This is on top of an already rich set of features including dual zone climate control with rear vents, and power adjustable front seats (with memory for the driver).



In terms of safety, the 2024 CX-5 adds a 360-degree camera and a comprehensive i-Activsense safety suite to all but the base variant. This means, features like Adaptive Front Lighting with High Beam Control, Blind Spot Monitoring with Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Driver Attention Alert, Front & Rear Smart City Brake Support, Smart Brake Support, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Cruising & Traffic Support are standard.

In the Malaysian market, where the refreshed CX-5 has been launched first, prices are up anywhere between RM 4,200 (P 50,200) to RM 5,300 (P 63,349). Expect the same sort of increases once the refreshed CX-5 arrives here within 2024.

  2. This made me laugh. "It sports a new GRILLE. . ." That grille design as far as I know have been the same for what seemed like decades for ALL its cars. Unfortunately while there is a core group who loves it, there are also many who doesn't like that KODO design. Who gets excited about a new Mazda when they all look the same.

  3. Uly, can you confirm that the NA 2.5Li engine sports fwd only?

    1. For the Philippines, 2.5 NA is AWD. In Malaysia, the 2.5 NA is FWD. The only available AWD variant there is with the Turbo. We still don't know what our variants would look like, but I've got a feeling Mazda PH will keep the current roster as is.

  4. Mazdas all looks the same. Except for the miata.
    The kodo design language gets a bit boring now.. mazda needs to come up w a new design direction asap. Perhaps they should revive the zoom zoom tagline..

    Why cant mazda come up with an all digital instrumentation affair?.. even a lowly cheap china car has all digital panels..

    1. Per Mazda PH spec sheet, yes...our models already have GVC Plus (so we're ahead in that regard).

  7. Is this coming to PH this year? Mazda sales agents says the non-turbo variant has already been refreshed since last year.

    1. I think what the agent referred to would be things like the larger digital screen in the gauges, revamped controls, etc. Those have been out since MY2020. The CX-8, however, just got those improvements last year. The revamped look--new headlights, bumpers, taillights--haven't arrived for the Philippines yet except for the Turbo variant.

      Production in Malaysia will continue until 2026. So...expect the refresh to arrive as the last "IPM" model...maybe by this year or next year?
