Following hundreds of hours of research and three rounds of votes, the 2024 North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year (NACTOY) award winners were announced.
NACTOY, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, kicked off the awards process in July by announcing an initial list of 52 eligible vehicles. At the Detroit Auto Show in September, that list was winnowed to the 25 vehicles deemed, “The Best of 2024,” and narrowed again to nine finalists that were announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
The winners were selected on the premise of automotive innovation, design, safety, performance, technology, driver satisfaction, user experience, and value.
Here are the three big winners:
2024 North American Car of the Year: Toyota Prius / Prius Prime
The fifth-generation Prius and Prius Prime (PHEV) won the car award, making this only the second time Toyota has won a NACTOY award. The previous time was in 2004 which also happens to be with the Prius (second-generation). The Prius beat out the Honda Accord and Hyundai Ioniq 6 in votes and marks the second major Car of the Year accolade it was received after winning the 2023-2024 Japan Car of the Year.
2024 North American Truck of the Year: Ford Super Duty
The only purely internal-combustion winner this year is the Ford Super Duty. It beat the Chevy Colorado and the Silverado EV for truck of the year. It brings Ford’s NACTOY tally to 16, while keeping its four-year winning streak in the truck category alive for another year.
2024 North American Utility of the Year: Kia EV9
After winning last year with the EV6, Kia once again takes home a NACTOY award with a battery electric vehicle: the EV9. Also based off the E-GMP platform as the EV6, the EV9 is one of the few three-row electric options in the market. It marks the eighth win for the Hyundai Motor Group as a whole, beating out the other finalists—the Genesis GV70 and Hyundai Kona and Kona Electric.
Everybody loves the new Prius
