MG has debuted the all-new 2024 MG3—a technologically advanced global sub-compact that’s set to take on the likes of the Honda City Hatchback, Mazda2, and Toyota Yaris.
Making its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, the MG3 debuts the brand’s Hybrid+ technology which pairs a more powerful motor and larger battery compared to its similarly-sized competitors.
At the core of its powertrain is a 102 horsepower 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine which is then paired to a 136 horsepower electric motor (194 horsepower, 250 Nm combined). Similar to Honda’s e:HEV setup, the MG3 has a separate motor generator as well. MG’s first non-plug-in hybrid, the MG3 Hybrid+ sprints to 100 km/h in just 8 seconds from rest. Even more impressive—its 80 to 120 km/h overtaking speed takes just 5 seconds. And with a 350-volt, 1.83-kWh lithium-ion battery, the MG3 Hybrid+ can be driven purely on electric power. Yet, it manages to return up to 22.7 km/L when the internal combustion engine fires up.
Speaking of driving modes, the Hybrid+ technology allows the MG3 to run purely on electric power. It can also automatically switch between series or parallel hybrid operation when it’s the most optimal. Driver selectable modes are also available.
Underneath, the MG3 uses ultra-high stiff chassis components. Meanwhile, suspension components have been designed for weight loss while enhancing both handling and ride.
Looks-wise, the MG3 takes on the new corporate design language also seen in the MG GT (MG 5) and MG 4. Designed at MG’s Shanghai studio, it’s larger for its class with its 4,113 mm length, 1,797 mm width, and a wheelbase that stretches to 2,570 mm.
Like other MG vehicles, the MG3 features a high level of in-car tech including a 7-inch digital instrument screen and a 10.25-inch central infotainment system. Other equipment highlights include a 360-degree camera and smartphone integration.
The MG3 also benefits from the latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Increased safety is delivered through MG Pilot technology, which includes Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, and Traffic Jam Assist.
Now comes the most interesting bit. The MG3, whether powered by a conventional combustion engine or a hybrid, is slated to arrive in Manila within the year. This was confirmed by an insider within SAIC Motor Philippines, and is part of their eight-vehicle launch salvo which already includes the MG One, MG Cyberster, MG4 XPower, and the MG ZS EV.

ReplyDeleteFor now, hybrid is more practical to own and operate. Nissan Kicks is one of the more practical choices in the industry. Might be a gove move from MG to counter BYD and more choices for the EV market.
