BYD makes history as the first Chinese carmaker to be shortlisted with two of its vehicles making it to the Top Three cars in the world. This is according to the World Car of the Year Awards which just announced the 2024 list.
The BYD Seal (Atto 4) was shortlisted for the 2024 World Car of the Year honor, something it shares with the Volvo EX30 and Kia EV9. On the other hand, the BYD Dolphin (lead photo) was shortlisted as 2024 Urban Car of the Year alongside the Lexus LBX and Volvo EX30.
A jury of more than a hundred international automotive journalists from 29 countries selected the finalists by secret ballot based on their evaluation of each eligible vehicle as part of their professional work. The jurors’ votes were then tabulated by KPMG.
From an initial list of 70 eligible vehicles across all categories, the World Car Awards’ jurors first voted to establish a short-list of 10 finalists for World Car of the Year and five for each of the other categories, except Design. They then evaluated and scored those finalists on eight separate parameters, based on their own test drive experiences, to determine the Top Three in the World and ultimately the Winner in each category.
The awarding of the World Car of the Year will happen at the New York International Auto Show on March 27.
