When your family’s net worth is around USD 2.8 billion (P 156 billion), you could pretty much afford just about any car. Dream it, and you’re probably be able to get one. But when it came to Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala choosing his new daily driver, the chairman and CEO of Ayala Corporation had a peculiar choice, and it’s something that underscores the direction of the company he’s leading as a whole.

Joining his personal fleet is a BYD Tang EV. The P 3.321-million mid-sized crossover is the second model in BYD’s “Dynasty” series of passenger vehicles. It gets its name from the most prosperous of all great Chinese dynasties.

Already looking all sleek and sporty, the Tang EV has impressive specs to match. Its dual electric motor setup produces a combined 517 horsepower and 680 Nm of torque—enough to scare a Porsche Cayenne. But get this, because it’s a battery electric vehicle, it’s got zero tail pipe emissions.

With a zero to 100 km/h time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h, it will surely give Jaime Augusto, an avid biker, some excitement behind the wheel. Plus, because it uses Brembo sport brakes, he’ll have no worry scrubbing all that speed out.

What’s more, the Tang EV has a large 86.4 battery (using BYD’s proprietary LFP Blade Battery, of course) giving it a range of up to 528 kilometers on a single charge. And because its new Philippine distributor, Mobility Access Philippines Ventures, Inc. (MAPVI) switched over from using the GBT plug standard to the more widely-accepted CCS Type 2 plug, it can be topped up using any of Ayala Corporation’s growing network of AC or DC chargers not just Metro Manila, but around Luzon as well.

Jaime Augusto’s decision to pick the Tang EV is in lockstep with the company he leads, Ayala Corporation’s commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Bob Palanca, COO of Iconic Dealership, Inc. (right of lead photo), who turned over the Tang EV to Jaime Augusto said that, “he was really happy with his purchase.”

Godspeed, Mr. Ayala. We hope to see you around enjoying your brand-new Tang EV.

  1. Its ok. He has many cars... and more importantly money. So when the BYD breaks down, which it most likely will, he'll still have another car to use.
