Bugatti may have sent off its quad-turbocharged W16 engine, but it looks like they’re not exactly done with that unique engine configuration. Ending years of speculation, Bugatti has just announced a new 16-cylinder engine, but this time, with a V configuration.
Whereas the previous W16 was basically a pair of narrow-angle V8s, the new V16 will be composed of two inline-8s. Notably, Bugatti isn’t the first company to build a V16 engine, Cadillac famously used one in the 1930s. That said, there isn’t a single V16-powered new car currently on the market.
Bugatti’s announcement hasn’t revealed any technical specification, but the new engine looks to sport lots of carbon fiber which will play a role in cutting down its weight. Furthermore, the French hypercar brand did confirm earlier that it will be electrified. Reports suggest having up to three electric motors with a combined output around 1,800 horsepower. It will also be capable of running on electric power alone for short distances.
The new model, which will debut in June, is built around a new monocoque. However, in terms of design, don’t expect it to be that radically different compared to current Bugatti models.
