Did MG Philippines Just Spoil Honda's New City Hatchback Launch With The First-Ever MG 3 HEV?

MG Philippines is set to add two highly awaited entries to its 2024 lineup with the upcoming launch of the MG3 and the MG G50 Plus MPV on June 4 after previewing it at the Auto Focus Summer Test Drive Festival.

The new MG3 is looking to turn heads being the first in its class to offer a full HEV option (as confirmed by documents filed with the LTO). This variant will be priced at just P 1,088,888.

The MG3 HEV will come with a 102 horsepower 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine which is then paired to a 136 horsepower electric motor (194 horsepower, 250 Nm combined). Similar to Honda’s e:HEV setup, the MG3 has a separate motor generator as well.

Alongside the HEV, there are three other variants of the MG 3:
  • MG3 Standard – P 678,888
  • MG3 Comfort  – P 828,888
  • MG3 Lux – P 898,888
These three variants are powered by a 1.5-liter normally-aspirated 4-cylinder engine making 118 horsepower and 150 Nm of torque.

Providing great overall value for money, the MG3 will come packing features such as fabric/leather combination seats, 9-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, 15-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, and fabric/leather combination seats.

Meanwhile, the 2024 G50 Plus is MG’s entry in the competitive MPV field in the Philippines. Three variants will be on offer:
  • MG G50 Plus Comfort MT – P 1,048,888
  • MG G50 Plus Elite AT – P 1,198,888
  • MG G50 Plus Premium AT – P 1,288,888
This reasonably priced MPV can seat up to eight people (seven in the Premium variant). It is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter with 169 PS and 250 Nm mated to a 7-speed wet-type dual clutch transmission.

Key features include automatic LED headlights, 16-inch (17-inch on the Premium) alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, power tailgate, automatic climate control, 12-inch infotainment system, and a 360-degree camera.

“We at MG Philippines are excited to continue introducing the most exciting options for our Filipino motorists and car enthusiasts, so we’re really looking forward to fully unveiling the new MG3 and G50 Plus very, very soon,” said MG Philippines President Felix Jiang.

The official prices and vehicle specifications of both the 2024 MG3 and G50 Plus will be revealed to the public this coming June 4, 2024.

  1. Prices and specs of MG3 hatchback are really good
It's a much better buy than the expensive Honda City hatchback
MG3 is likely positioned as somewhat MG's replacement to the aging pre face-lift MG ZS SUV line which is still one of the best selling products of MG Philippines
Specs of MG G50 Plus are also good though it needs huge cash discounts in order to make it more sellable

Is the MG50 Plus AT or WCVT? The bullet point shows AT while the article says wet CVT. Incidentally, what is the tranny for the MG3 - not mentioned here.

    1. I agree, it's as never as popular as the Jazz, yet an underrated hatch to get even at a price comparable to a subcompact crossover or MPV.

  4. MG3 EV will surely disrupt the EV and Hybrid market. With its very competitive price and specs, even BYD will surely feel the pressure for dolphin...bring it on!

  5. Though not all. Buyers of Japanese Honda and Chinese MG are very different they won't compete. It is only the Chinese who views everybody as their rival. If that's the case, Chinese cars should be everywhere by now. Japanese still dominate so obviously they don't compete.

    1. Still dominating for now...but it's very evident that japanese and korean brands are now offering better specced and priced units as they felt the pressure of chinese rivals. Look at the total % sales of chinese brands in our market, it disrupted the market already.

    2. Well as far as percentages go some of chinese brands have plateaued like geely and some are just eating into another chinese brand's share like mg and cherry. So the rivals are really chinese to chinese

    3. China car brands still has miniscule % of ph car market. After several years and lots of dealerships, critics has been proven right that its not reliable, not durable and parts availability would be a problem

  6. Absolutely Spot on. MG prices are very reasonable. Definitely The MPV G50 is the Best seller for the British brand. But the MG3 may not be as good as the G50 because the incoming kia Subcompact CrossOver SONET will storm the Car market sales chart at 770k starting SRP
