Jaguar Land Rover To Use Chery, Jaecoo Platforms For Upcoming EVs

After 12 years, Chery and Jaguar Land Rover’s partnership has entered the next logical phase: platform sharing. This formal announcement comes a couple of months after Chery Auto’s chairman Yin Tongyue announced that a “Premium European brand” will use their platform for its vehicles.

Under the new agreement, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will use Chery’s M3X and E0X modular architectures on a range of electrified (PHEV and BEV) vehicles. Currently, these two Chery platforms are used by the Chinese automaker’s high-end Exeed brand in cars such as the Exlantix ET, Exlantix ES, Luxeed 7, Luxeed R7, Exeed RX, and Chery Tiggo 9 (Jaecoo 8).

The M3X (also known as T2X in China) is a platform co-developed with the help of German auto tech company and steel maker, Bentler. It is the platform dedicated to ICE vehicles and PHEVs. This platform can be equipped with Chery’s “Super Hybrid” powertrain that promises up to 1,000 kilometers of range.

Meanwhile, the E0X was jointly-developed by Chery and Huawei. This BEV and Extended Range EV (EREV) architecture uses an 800-volt system and can be equipped with advanced self-driving technologies. It can also be outfitted with air suspension making is suitable for JLR’s planned range of EVs.

JLR intends to use the platform on a family of vehicles branded Freelander which JLR has licensed to Chery. The Freelander will be designed in close collaboration with both Chery and JLR’s creative teams and will be built at Chery Jaguar Land Rover’s existing plant in Changshu. They will be positioned to battle in China’s rapidly growing New Energy Vehicle market but will be marketed separately from both Chery and JLR brands. After its initial launch in China, JLR has confirmed that it will be offered for global markets as well.
