BYD Wants To Overthrow Toyota's Hybrid Leadership With The 2025 Sealion 6 DM-i

With a P 1.548-million price tag, BYD Cars Philippines sees the new Sealion 6 DM-i as a critical piece to achieving their growth plans in the country (full specs here, watch our first impressions here).

Unlike their other offerings like the Dolphin and Atto 3, the Sealion 6 DM-i is a plug-in hybrid. Though it uses a high output electric motor and large capacity BYD Blade Battery (it can even be charged using the bundled wall box charger), its Atkinson-cycle 1.5-liter acts as a power generator thus eliminating range anxiety. All in all, it should deliver over 1,000 kilometers of combined range—double or even triple other conventional or even electrified compact SUVs.

As such, the newest brand under Ayala Corporation’s ACMobility sees the Sealion 6 DM-i as being able to capture a sizeable market share chunk, especially for its segment. The Sealion 6 DM-i competes in the compact SUV (C-segment SUV) which currently accounts for 3.5 percent (around 15,000 units) of new car sales per year. In the coming years, ACMobility sees this segment to grow to about 5.2 percent or more than 25,000 units per year.

Quoting industry data, the current C-segment SUV leaders are the Ford Territory (49 percent) and the Corolla Cross (18 percent). These are the competitors whose buyers the Sealion 6 DM-i hope to capture. As a secondary market, BYD is also looking at the Upper C-segment category where electrified models have managed to corner a 38 percent share—the highest of any vehicle category. There, the CR-V has a 63 percent share followed by the RAV4 (17 percent), Hyundai Tucson (11 percent), and the Mazda CX-5 (8 percent).

All things equal, BYD Cars Philippines sees the Sealion 6 DM-i reaching a 30 percent market share or around 2,100 sales annually. This will make it the second best-selling offering in the C-segment SUV segment and the best-selling electrified offering beating even market leader Toyota.

Targeting image-driven, premium-seeking male buyers looking for a premium and tech-laden SUV, BYD sees the Sealion 6 DM-i has an SUV with advanced technology that democratizes EV adoption resulting to an expanded customer base. BYD plans to leverage three key communication pillars: Innovation, Sustainability, and Global.

BYD Cars Philippines will highlight features such as the Super DM-i platform and its more than 1,000-kilometer combined range (100 kilometers all-electric range); BYD Connect which provides real-time connectivity and vehicle monitoring thanks to its built-in 4G connection; a rotating 15.6-inch display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; a premium design and amenities including vented leather seats, panoramic sunroof, and a 10-speaker Infinity sound system; advanced safety provided by the DiPilot ADAS system; and finally the conveniences offered by the once-a-year PMS and a 10-year complimentary access to the BYD app.

Do you think BYD Cars Philippines can achieve its target and beat Toyota in the electrified SUV game?

  2. 1.545M for a large (4.7 meters) compact PHEV SUV from a global brand. I want one!

With this who will still buy the more expensive Ford Territory with a very thirsty ecobomb engine, jerky dual crap transmission and expensive
& horrendous after sales? Not to mention Ford Ph is afraid to lend one to Uly 🤣

In Australia, this particular variant is around Php300K more expensive, so it appears that BYD Ph is passing the 0% tarrif savings to its customers. Bravo!

    1. Not only Ford but all including the Japanese cars. Toyota thought it could dodge the Chinese EV bullets, saying the world is not ready for EVs, concentrating on hybrids and even the difficult to commercialize hydrogen fuel. Thinking that the Chinese hasn't thought of that hybrids are still needed to bridge the gap in some parts of the world. There, 1,100 kms at 1.6m hybrid and very soon a 2,000 km. Quo vadis, Toyota?

    2. Won't buy Ford daw but wants to buy Chinese crap.

    3. Not all chinese car brands are crap. Your Ford's engine/transmission will most likely fail in 3 years than a BYD or Geely.

BYD's market cap is around USD100B+ while your pathetic Ford is only around USD40B+ , which is astonishing considering BYD is virtually (via unfavorable tariffs) not allowed to sell in the US just yet - but once BYD is able to dance around it, collectively the US car brands will further decline.

    4. Where've you been when all of these were happening? Seems like you just crawled out from a by cave. Chinese cars aren't crappy anymore, especially their world-leading EVs and hybrids. Brands like BYD, MG, GWM, Geely and lots more are being exported, tested and reviewed by car experts and buyers. It's no longer the crappy cars years back.

    5. That just meant they were overpricing the Atto 3 by 350k. I much prefer a pure EV than have a hybrid for the 0.1% scenario that you really need more than 400km range. I hope they either bring down the price of the Atto 3 or bring in the Sealion 6 EV version that is priced the same way as this is. Better yet, they bring in the Sealion 7 already.

    6. @RG who cares about billions of dollars. We're talking about cars. Stop derailing the topic.

    7. The point is, BYD is the third largest auto company next to Toyota in terms of market cap. Your garbage Ford is not even in the top 10 and barely surviving thanks to its PPVs and rebadged Chinese units (oh the irony).

In the future, I won't be surprised if Ford will be majority-owned by a Chinese brand.

    8. Huh? Is that how a car is measured now, by market cap? Following your logic, those manufacturers with lower market cap like the "beloved" Honda brand, is also crap, right?

    9. The point is you cannot claim BYD is crap and that no one should buy it over Ford when the market deems BYD much more valuable.

More value = more capital = more R&D = Good Products.

While Ford is just a proven expert in hiding known serious defects in their product and spend their money on settling class action lawsuits.

And all this is coming from a guy who supposedly said he "bought" a BRZ, yet Subaru's market cap is quite low. You just shot yourself in the foot bro.

    11. BYD > Ford
Every other car brand > Ford
      Ford > Garbage

  3. Oh no Toyota, Honda and other Japs carmakers, your dead meat here unless Byd fumbles on after sales service which Ayala is known for.

    1. SADLY, sakit ito ng Ayala. my aircon valve for my Lavida, a model that did not receive any update since it was launched, took FOUR MONTHS to arrive. they mentioned more or less 2 months of ETA for that part.

Sana may press release din sila ng arrival ng spare parts, hindi lang arrival ng stocks.

  4. This is a true game changer from byd! That range and price for a phev! D*mn!!!

  5. Paktay Rav4, recently adjusted to 2m, so 1.6 against 2m? One's gotta be so dumb not to choose the 1.6m which is even more loaded. BYD is a trailblazing company producing good quality batteries and now cars that Toyota can not easily dismiss as other cheap Chinese cars. BYD leveraged control of it's supply chain to be able to price it's hybrids and EVs at very low price. Toyota must be sweating bullets now.

  6. Oh no Toyota is going down!! Hehe. Free market buy what you want. Stats show what people buy globally. No need to know which brand. Chinese cars increasing sales mainly thanks to almost 80% of entire Russian market because most pulled out. No hate enjoy your Chinese car.

  7. There is a reason why Chinese car prices are low. Thanks to brother Xi government help is always on hand. I have the same principles as Angie King. Free to choose but I have my principles.

  8. Toyota will still be king with its cover all strategy of ICE, HYBRIDS, EV'S, and hydrogen/fuel cell

  9. I wonder what BYD's margins are at this price. This is super competitive pricing.

  10. China car brands EV's, PHEV and hybrids here will be dead courtesy of BYD

  11. Really? .. even if you looked dumb?

  12. LOL. Lots of people here seem enthusiastic but they don't have a clue what abyss they're jumping into when buying this car. And that's hilarious. 🤣🤣🤣

  13. EU has already slap punitive tariff on BYD and other china car brands bcoz of proven CCP heavy subsidy. byd pricing here benefits ph car buyers, but will surely decimate its china car brands comrade here. Other china car brands here overpriced, mura naman galing china, too much ang patong ng distributor n dealerships.

  14. Who is that person Angie King? What is special about him? What are his credentials?

  15. Sir Uly how do you compare the cabin and trunk space with the likes of CRV and RAV4? Honestly considering this PHEV more than CRV RS which was my first choice. But that 1m price diff is really a kicker! And I like the PHEV more than HEV concepts anyway, best of both worlds. If I don’t charge the PHEV if I don’t have access to a station at home/condo, can just continue to gas up right?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. PHEV is much much better than HEV, if charging is your concern, just visit the malls and stroll around or have lunch it worth the meal and huge savings. Or visit your friendly gas station and tip the mechanic for charging cost. cheers!

      Delete
    2. Cost wise (PHEV) to charge an 18kw battery will cost Php225 at Php12.5 per KWH for a 100km range. HEV, will cost you three to four times the amount at the same at 8km/liter. So saan ka pa pupunta?

      Delete
    3. Depende sa life style, saan ka comportable, and may peace of mind ownership experience. F san ka masaya...don u punta

      Delete
    4. PHEVs have more problems than HEVs due to higher tech and more parts.

      Delete
  16. Depende talaga yan sa usage and lifestyle. For me I value my time so hybrid ako. Since sa condo ako no way for me to charge and even if may charging station I wouldn't be bothered maghintay. Time is priceless. Kahit mas mura mas gusto ko na umuwi pagod na ako sa work

    ReplyDelete
  17. PHEV acts like a HEV, it charges the battery as well. Just that it has a much larger battery in case you want to run on battery at a much longer distance. HEV around 1-2 kms pure EV which PHEV can do if the motor charges the battery ala HEV style. So if you don’t want to charge with PHEV ok lang, it will act like HEV.

    1. Plug it in the wall outlet to get more electric range.

  18. Please correct me if I am wrong... the sealion has a 60lit gas tank which is claimed to go 1000km... this equates to around 16km/lit. The Toyota corolla cross claims it can go 22km/lit. So if the figures are correct, how is the sealion a better option (in terms of fuel efficiency) than the Toyota?

    ReplyDelete
  19. For me parang 3x yung gastos sa PHEVs.
    1. Need to charge
    2. Need to fill gasoline
    3. Need to replace battery after 8 years or so, which cost an arm and leg and kidney.
