Taking a page straight off BYD’s tech book, Geely has unveiled its own self-developed lithium iron phosphate blade battery that promises better battery life, charging speed, and safety. The Geely New Short Blade EV Battery Technology—as it’s officially called—will also offer increased energy density, volume utilization, and increased flexibility to future vehicle design.
The Geely New Short Blade EV Battery Technology uses a “high-strength, high-thermal stability, high-heat-resistant diaphragm, with a highly stable separator paired with safe electrodes resulting in higher energy density and safety” (yeah, they really emphasized that many highs in that single sentence). An internally-developed Self-Fusing technology also prevents short circuits and fires during accidents. If the battery cell is punctured during extreme shock, an aluminum foil layer will fuse into the battery diaphragm to create an insulating layer.
To date, the standard automotive test for EV battery safety performance is the single needle puncture test. However, Geely Auto has been testing the New Short Blade EV Battery Technology with eight simultaneous puncture needles, which significantly increase the amount of damage received in extreme crash situations. During testing, it was simultaneously punctured by eight steel needles in unison, each with a diameter of 5 mm and left to stand for one hour with zero effects to the battery. In addition, the New EV Battery Technology underwent a 5.8 mm (5.8×42 mm) infantry rifle bullet penetration test, with no signs of thermal ignition.
Geely also put the New Short Blade EV Battery Technology through the industry’s first ‘Six Extremes” serial test that includes seawater corrosion immersion, extreme cold environment, high-frequency pack bottom scraping, 26-ton overweight rolling, single-pack side collision, and fire roasting. Thanks to its patented grid frame design, energy-absorbing cavity, three-layer sandwich bottom guard plate, CTB integration, thermal runaway control system, and multiple other safety features, the battery passed all six tests.
Thanks to its “multi-element doped electrode materials” Geely is also able to extend their blade battery’s life.
According to Geely’s tests, the cycle life of the New Short Blade EV Battery Technology can reach 3,500 cycles, equivalent to charging and driving for 1 million kilometers with minimal impact to battery range. Based on the average of 20,000 kilometers driven annually, the New Short Blade EV Battery Technology can be in service for up to 50 years, significantly extending the usage life of the battery, improving the residual value of second hand EVs, and reducing carbon emissions by more than 80,000 tons a year.
Moreover, test data show that Geely’s battery beats BYD’s blade battery in charging time. In blade batteries with the same capacity, the 10 to 80 percent SOC average charging time is around 26 minutes. With the New Short Blade EV Battery Technology, the average time is 17 minutes 4 seconds.
The New EV Battery Technology also has a strong discharge capacity offering longer driving range than BYD’s blade batteries in the cold. In ambient temperatures of minus 30 Celsius, the capacity retention rate of long blade battery on average fell to 78.96 percent while the New Short Blade EV Battery Technology retained 90.54 percent of its capacity.
Zeekr,Galaxy and Geometry EVs of Geely are gonna benefit from this new highly advanced battery technology
ReplyDeleteIf all these claims are vetted by 3rd party testers and proven accurate, my next vehicle could very likely be a geely ev
ReplyDeleteeww gaya gaya sa BYD
ReplyDeleteThen they should have a 50 year warranty on the battery if they are claiming that. Else all of it is just for show
ReplyDeleteKahit 20 years lang. problema nalang if the company is still gonna be around after that time lol
DeleteHindi nga maka offer replacement sa bumper ng coolray ko 50 years pa na warranty nalalaman. Bumper lang 1 month waiting.
ReplyDeleteSo BYD pa rin is the best EV battery since they claims in my inquiry that all vehicle parts can be supplied or available here in the Phils. Anyway no problem since all parts are made in China that can only travel by air within 6hrs..
ReplyDeleteBut geely also made in china and also just 6 hours air travel, so its not as simple as no problem. Actually thats the main problem for china car brands here - after sales support and parts replament taking too long........
DeleteVolkswagen is owned by same people of BYD and sourced from China eh no parts also. So same same lang sa Byd no parts din.
